Circa: 50-60s Condition: Excellent Size: Medium Type: Nylon Suit Blouse Manufacturer: Unknown Vintage 50s Nylon Suit Blouse with Pin Tucks
After the war, manufacturers used the material that parachutes were made from in the clothing industry. The fabric was, of course, nylon. A synthetic fiber, nylon was found to meet the needs of the new working women as well as those at home.

It didn't wrinkle like cotton and could be hand washed and drip dried at night and ready for use the next morning. NO IRONING NEEDED! I'm surprised they didn't start making everything out of it.
Nylon first began to be used in hosiery--replacing silk (hence the term "nylons", and soon this fabric was being used in lingerie and sleepwear as well as accessory pieces like blouses and scarves.
This little nylon blouse is a great example of this venturing out into new fabric territory. It may have been made in the mid to late fifties. Its design is wonderful for suits! A blouse no longer needing to be tucked in to a skirt is a wonderful thing if you are tired of having to re-tuck all day long. This gem has the answer that quickly spread to many suit staples: the little slits at the (shorter than usual) bottom edge of the blouse are faced, so that they need no supervision! NO TUCKING! Hooray!!!!FREEDOM! (I may be overstating it somewhat, but I remember all that tucking in!).
Another innovation: sewn in mock sleeve cuffs. No more ironing or struggle trying to keep the cuff up.
No tags, but the measurements are: Bust:36-37" Waist:30" Sleeve Length:8" Underarm to hem: 10"
This blouse is in excellent condition. I see no holes, tears, rips, or stains. The buttons down the back are original and all present. The little pin tucks are all in tact.
This blouse is ready to go under your favorite vintage suit--or to be worn your own way--with jeans and jacket, perhaps? |
