Circa: 1920s Condition: Excellent Size: S-M Type: Coats Manufacturer: unknown This mid-twenties black wool coat has the twenties characteristic wrap front sack look, tapered hem and unusual detailing. The series of darts across the shoulders guarantees a good line across the shoulders. And for sheer interest, there are curved tucks on the coat back & matching tucks on the pointed sleeves.

The sleeves boast rare tortoise-shell barrel buttons.
The coat is made of a beautiful, soft wool. It might be cashmere--(there's no tag so I'm going only by touch). The curly lambs wool shawl collar was very fashionable in the twenties, and was probably a medium priced coat at that time.
There is no closure for the coat which allows for the display of the sweater or suit that might be worn beneath. (I have included a photo where the coat was worn as a costume in a play, to show you the overall effect that was intended). The hem is tapered--shorter in front--another popular twenties design feature. The coat is a dark black. I have lightened some of the pictures so that you can see the beautiful detail.
The size range would, I think, be fairly wide, as the front can--by design--be left open. (This makes it a great costume for theater use). I will give you the measurements of the actual fabric but a few inches larger would not pose a problem because it is open at the closure. The girl in the photo is small, so my estimate would be that it could be worn in the X Small - Medium range.
Shoulder to shoulder: 15inches Back shoulder seam to hem: 40" Back Collar Seam to hem: 42" Front shoulder seam to hem: 36.5" Sleeve Length (straight arm): 23" Bust: 38" Waist area: 40"
I don't see any holes or tears or stains at all in this coat. Detect no odors. It is in excellent condition. The lining may have been added later because the fabric seems new...(however--the seams are pinked. Perhaps it is original. Don't know).
This coat is ready for a cloche hat and "Mary Jane" Pumps. All that is needed is a Time Machine to take you straight back to the 1920s! |
