Circa: Late 1930s, early 1940s Condition: Very Good-+ Size: S Type: Silver Satin Manufacturer: Connie Tired of drab and use-overs, after the depression, women went crazy over glamourous hollywood style evening wear.
Hollywood introduced by the likes of Myrna Loy and Lauren Bacall, these pantsuits are called (pajamas or pyjamas) but were actually formal wear for the jet set in the late 1930s and the early 1940s. (Well--not jets, not yet...but the pretty fast set anyway!) These were definitely not your mama's pajamas! They were worn as formal wear--out to sophisticated parties, or as hostess wear for entertaining guests at home.
This set boasts a lovely floral quilted embroidery and peplum on the jacket, covered buttons, and pleated "big leg" pants with a button waistband and a side zipper opening. All these features attest to the quality and authenticity of this piece.

They are a beautiful example of this hard to find genre of formal and/or leisurewear.
Made of a silvery heavy satin, the jacket has lovely quilted embroidery design (shown here also on the back side), beautifully draping long sleeves with cuffs, covered self-fabric buttons, peplum, slight shoulder pads of self-fabric (not attached for a personal fit), and an attached sash belt that can be used (as shown) either to the front or the back.
The tag in this garment reads "Connie"(a sportswear designer of the period), but gives no size, so we will go by measurements for a good fit.
Top: Bust:38" Sleeve 26" Waist area: 32"
Pants: Natural Waist:27" (Buttons could move about one inch for 28") Also, the waist area is hidden, and could therefore be altered for a larger waist size. Non zippered side seam and other seams about 1". Original metal side zipper is functional.
Hips: 40" Natural Waist to Hem (Outseam): 40" Inseam: 28" Hem: 2"usable
This garment is in very good condition to excellent condition. There is some general fading of the fabric, (but it does not detract from the beauty of this piece!) and is not area specific, so it rather gives an iridescent "patina" quality to the piece. There is a scuff on one leg in the back, but it does not detract. (I have lowered the price from $129.00 to $99.00 because of the scuff which I had not noticed before now.)
This set looks fabulous on stage and works wonderfully as a costume as well as a collectible of a very glamorous design. (I can see either piece worn separately with other pieces as well--black velvet on top or bottom would look smashing! |
