Circa: 1920s-30s Condition: Very Good + Size: M Type: Formal Dresses Manufacturer: Unknown The little lady who gave me this dress was as cute as could be. Full of energy and memories, she handed it to me and announced, "This dress was worn at the Ritz Carlton in 1929!"
And I bet she looked lovely. I only wish I had a picture to share with this. But I can see it in my mind's eye.
This great late 20s, early 30s formal is made of a heavyweight satin taffeta. It's darker black (is there such a thing as buttery black?) than the pictures show. Its very early 30s in its overall appearance: the puffed sleeves and pointed bodice both hark back to the Victorian Era which was still popular and became even more so up through the forties.

Shown here with no slip, a fuller slip would give a very striking silhoutte indeed!
The dress has an interesting off the shoulder design, yet without all the boning (the spaghetti straps are functional here!) The full skirt is layers of taffeta horizontal panels--one unshirred layer, connected to one shirred layer, which is connected to a large unshirred layer to the hem.
The totality of it makes for a sweet but sophisticated presentation. I would imagine that she wore black gloves with it but I forgot to ask her! People wore a lot of sparkly with black at that point in time. Diamond earrings, necklace and bracelet all matching would probably have adorned it--(possibly even a tiara!). And, according to the weather, either a very light wrap (assuit style in gold?--I have one listed!) or a black fur coat or wrap. (I have one of those, too!)
Ah! I would have loved to have seen it!
This dress comes with a story but of course,no size tags! So we will go by measurements for a good fit.
Bust:36" Waist:30" Waist to hem:40" Underarm to waist: 9"
The original side metal zipper is present and functional. This would have to be one of the earliest zippers, but it still works!
The condition is Very Good. There is some slight discoloration under the arms which is generalized (not delineated lines as is usually the case), but as a deep purple color change. But is not noticible at all when worn. It has been cleaned of residue ages ago, but the slight discoloration remains. The large sleeves cover it nicely! (This is responsible for the lower price on such a unique and lovely dress!) Other than the fading, its in very good and wearable condition--and would be a superb costume for a period piece or music review! |
