Circa: Late 40s Condition: Very Good and Wearable Size: M-L Type: Twill and Velvet Day Dress Manufacturer: Unknown This is a classic War-Time mid-40s day dress. Dressier than an house dress, this dress was a money and war-coupon saving device, as this dress could be worn to church an afternoon tea, or with a fox stole and women's top hat & veil added, it could be worn to a dressier event such as a wedding or to the theater.

In a time when sacrifice was necessary, these ideas stretched the wardrobe!
This authentic period dress is made of a twill or gabardine and velvet trim and with self covered buttons. Its unusual to find a purple dress from this period with color integrity like this one. Usually the purples are somewhat fugitive and leave a mottled look. This one is color-even and purple all over!
Note:(Pattern photo, from American Weekly 1948, is to show authenticity of period style and is not included.)
It's great dress for a forties theme party or for plays or musicals set in this period such as GUYS AND DOLLS.
This dress is in very good and wearable condition, and has been dry cleaned since I have had it.(It is large for my model but fits nicely on the correct size!) No spots, stains, tears, holes, or odors. Side metal zipper is original. Belt, (not original with dress but is from the period), is a close match and is included, but it does not need a belt to look smashing!.
There are no tags in this dress, so we will go by measurement for size.
Bust:38+" Waist:32 Waist to hem:30" Underarm to waist:7"
Add a large hat, clutch purse, mid-length gloves, platform shoes or pumps, and this dress will take you (or your audience) back almost 70 years! |
