1185

"The Annunciating Angel Gabriel" Antique Victorian Sepia-Tone Hand-Colored Print / Artist: Melozzo da Forli This is a wonderfully detailed antique Victorian hand-colored, sepia-tone print of the Archangel Gabriel, also known as 'The Angel of Birth'. Although this picture is not signed or titled, the original title is, "The Annunciating Angel Gabriel", originally painted by the famous artist, Melozzo da Forli. Gabriel's graceful movements come alive in this print. Lovely complimentary gold-painted wood frame with decorative banding of marbled trim color. The original art dealers stamp on paper backing reads "A.G. Comings & Son, Photo Goods Artistic Framing, 37 W. College St., Oberlin, Ohio". Old, original glass, wire hanger, and paper backing. Both the print and frame are in excellent original condition, except for a very tiny dark spot on Gabriel's arm - (see photo). Circa 1900.

*** Here is some INTERESTING INFO ABOUT THE ARCHANGEL GABRIEL:

Gabriel is the most beloved of all members of the heavenly host and also one of the highest ranked of all angels. An interesting detail is the tradition that Gabriel is 'The Angel of Birth', carefully spending the nine months of pregnancy watching over each unborn child and instructing it on the necessary knowledge of heaven that is an inherent part of all people. Just before birth, though, he touches the baby on the upper lip to make it unable to remember all the information about heaven until it returns to the spiritual state of death;the sign of Gabriel's touch is the cleft just below the nose. Also, Gabriel is called 'The Angel of Truth' and his symbol is that of the lily, as seen in this print.

St. Gabriel has been many times portrayed as the messenger announcing the birth of John the Baptist and that of Jesus Christ. In the apochryphal legends he also foretells the birth of Samson, and that of the Virgin Mary. From these frequently repeated messages which foretold important births, Gabriel naturally came to be regarded as the angel who presides over childbirth.

Because of Gabriel's role as a communicator and mediator between Heaven and Earth, Catholics hold the Archangel to be a Patron Saint of broadcasters, telecommunications workers, diplomats, messengers, postal workers, and stamp collectors. Because Gabriel helped the prophet Daniel interpret his dreams, those seeking similar aid with their own dream work may petition the Archangel for help. Additionally, because Gabriel announced the births of both John the Baptist and Jesus Christ, women hoping for heavenly assistance in trying to conceive children have reported benefits from keeping an Angel Gabriel novena candle burning in the home.

*** I've also included below a short bit of INFORMATION ON THE FAMOUS LISTED ARTIST, MELOZZA DA FORLI:

Melozzo da Forlì (c. 1438 - November 8, 1494), was a famous Italian Renaissance painter and architect, the first who practised foreshortening with much success and one of the most outstanding fresco painters of the 15th century. He was the most important member of the Forlì painting school.

The cherub is nicely detailed with very pleasing features. The black and gold color around the lithograph is reverse painted on the glass with a fine, rope-turned, brass frame. *** I've included a BRIEF HISTORY ON THE FAMOUS ARTIST, RAPHAEL:

Raphael (1483 – 1520), one of the most prominent Italian Renaissance painters, created masterpieces that epitomized the High Renaissance ideals of harmony and beauty. From Urbino, Italy, Raphael was admitted to the workshop of the town’s leading painter at age 12 and quickly surpassed his instructor. Possessing a remarkable command of depth, perspective, light and shadow, Rafael imparted warmth and serenity to his magnificently lifelike figures. His most brilliant works include the stanzas inside the Vatican, and Madonnas which he portrayed with human emotions, as no artist had previously done. Pope Julius II had such high regard for the grace and perfection of Raphael’s work that at one point, he was inclined to make him Cardinal.

1245

Archangel Garbriel w/ Trumpet Antique Print "Gloria in Excelsis" - Glory to God in the Highest / Artist: Fra Angelico This is a very special antique print of the Archangel Gabriel playing his famous trumpet. This picture was originally painted by famous artist, Fra Angelico and is a detail from the Linaiuoli Triptych. This loving angel, whose name means, "Hero of God" is commonly known for being the bearer of good news. "Gloria in excelsis Deo" (Latin for "Glory to God in the highest") is the title and beginning of a hymn known also as the Greater Doxology and the Angelic Hymn. The hymn begins with the words that the angels sang when the birth of Christ was announced to shepherds in Luke 2:14. In this print, Gabriel’s face and red robe are highly detailed and beautiful. This picture is bright and vibrant. The gold textured matting is arched above Gabriel. Under him, in large fancy lettering reads, "Gloria in Excelsis", which translates to "Glory to God in the Highest". Original, gold painted, wood frame. The paper backing is torn. Old wire hanger and glass. This piece is in excellent original condition with very minor age-appropriate wear. Circa 1910.

*** I've included a short interesting BIO ABOUT THE FAMOUS LISTED ARTIST, FRA ANGELICO:

Fra Angelico, whose real name was Guido di Pietro, was born sometime between 1395 and 1400 in Vicchio, a small town near Florence.

For a long time, there was a bit of an uncertainty over his birth-date – the exact day is still not known, but he was thought to have been born earlier than the aforementioned dates - and the fine details of his life still remain shrouded. Fra Angelico lived in the early years of the Renaissance, when, unlike later during the High Renaissance, artists hadn't yet achieved the elevated status where every notable personal trait was recorded for posterity.

The first time that Fra Angelico was written about in any great detail was, after his death, in Giorgio Vasari's 'Lives of the Artists'. Here he is depicted as a rather unworldly, saintly personality, who cared for religion and religion alone. His work tells you differently – when I look at it, I see a brilliant colorist, a brilliant draftsman, a brilliant man with a broad, humanist vision.

As a young man, Fra Angelico was a successful and rather well-known painter. According to Vasari, he was so in demand with art patrons that he could have made a mint and lived on happily in the secular world. However he was strongly inclined towards religion and entered the Dominican Order and devoted his talent, without any expectation of personal compensation, for the Church's benefit henceforth. He worked first at the San Domenico Monastery in Fiesole and later at the San Marco Monastery in Florence. He took on the name of Fra Giovanni da Fiesole. The title 'Fra Angelico' was bestowed upon him posthumously – for his angelic temperament and the angelic beauty with which he infused his paintings.

Most of the paintings by Fra Angelico are based on Biblical themes. Art for art's sake was not in vogue then. Paintings were meant to celebrate Christ and the Christian religion. However Fra Angelico's works show a keen interest in earthly existence as well – his figures are realistic and show a remarkable study of perspective and chiaroscuro. His painting 'The Deposition' is the first painting of the Renaissance to incorporate a well-composed foreground with a realistically receding background landscape.

Apparently his work was first noticed by Pope Eugenius IV when he was in exile from Rome and stayed for a while at the San Marco Monastery. He liked the paintings so much that when eventually he returned to Rome, he invited Fra Angelico to come paint frescoes in the Capella del Sacramento of St. Peter's. These frescoes, unfortunately, have since been destroyed.

During his sojourn in Rome, Fra Angelico's steady, calm temperament won him the admiration of Pope Nicholas V and he was offered position as the Archbishop of Florence. Fra Angelico turned down this offer. He was already Prior of the San Marco Monastery and he was not ambitious. All he wanted was a simple, uncomplicated life and the chance to paint in the service of the Church.

He returned to the San Marco Monastery in 1450, but two years later, his term as Prior having ended, he went back to Rome to paint more frescoes for the Pope.

He died on 18 February 1455 in the monastery of Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome. He was in his mid-fifties.

Lg. 2-Picture Antique Print of Archangel Gabriel w Trumpet & Violin 'Angel of the Tabernacle' / Artist: Fra Angelico This is an inspiring two-picture antique print of Archangel Gabriel. This picture was originally painted by the famous listed artist, Fra Angelico. Both pictures are printed on a beautiful and special sparkly, gold-textured, foil-type paper. In both pictures, Gabriel stands upon a cloud and is framed by a rich gold-colored, arch-shaped matting. The left picture, titled "An Angel of the Tabernacle", shows Gabriel playing the violin. In the right picture (title unknown) he’s seen playing his famous trumpet. The gold highlights throughout makes this piece dazzle. The original gold-painted, thick matting nicely compliments these beautiful pictures. The original gold-painted wood frame has age-appropriate wear with some scratches. Original glass and old wire hanger. Missing paper backing. The print is in excellent original condition and the matting is almost perfect with a couple very small smudges that blend right in. This picture is filled with a multitude of wonderful, charming details. Everywhere you look something interesting is going on. This inspirational scene features two adult guardian angels standing in the corner of the room praying along with a mother and her two children. A bible sits on the couch beside the mother and little boy. Two more angelic angels are seen playing with the little boy’s toy clown and tucking in the girl’s doll to bed. It’s very sweet. Above the family, hanging on the wall, are three religious pictures of Mary and Jesus. A second bible sits, displayed on the bookcase. Another great detail that cannot be forgotten is the family cat, seen praying beside the mother’s feet (maybe she’s just licking her paws, but let us pretend atleast that she’s praying). Guardian Angel Helping a Young Girl Across Wooden Plank w/ a Serpent / Snake Below, Large Rare Antique Print This is a hard to find, magnificent and large antique lithograph print of a heavenly Guardian Angel helping a young little girl get across a rickety small wooden plank with a serpent waiting and hiding for them at the end. This is not the typical and classical picture of the Guardian Angel helping the two children cross the rickety bridge, although it does remind you of it. In all my travels, I’ve never seen this picture before with just the little girl, nor have I ever seen this picture represented with the plank and serpent. This rare scene features just the little girl, holding the Guardian Angel’s hand and with her other hand, she holds a wooden walking stick. It’s interesting to note that as the child walks across the narrow wooden plank, you can tell from her expression that she is obviously oblivious to the danger in front of her - the sneaky slithering evil serpent. Thankfully, her Guardian Angel sees it and protects her from harm. Both of their faces are charming and the bright, rich, and colorful details throughout make this piece all the more special. In addition, the lush, green landscape adds a nice sense of depth to this delightful scene. This large and captivating print is in excellent original condition. The molded wood frame retains the original black finish and is also in excellent original condition. Original glass and old twisted wire and string hanger. Missing the paper backing. Circa 1910.

Within the center of this plaque is a beautiful piece of porcelain Limoge transferware in the pretty shape of a medallion. The enchanting romantic scene features an attractive young lady in an elegant green dress, partially topless and reading a book. Standing and leaning beside her on the bench is an adorable cherubic little cupid. The fine details and colors of this transfer are fantastic, such as the woman’s beautiful romantic harp that sits beside her feet and the Cupid’s quiver that lays on the bench beside him. This inviting and heart-warming scene doesn’t end there. Bordering the scene and applied to the porcelain Limoge, is a beautiful hand-painted, shapely decorative pattern. A soft, rich, burgundy-colored velvet matting frames the Limoge, adding even more texture, depth, and richness to this fascinating plaque. The porcelain, transfer, and applied decoration is in beautiful excellent original condition. The velvet trim matting is also in excellent original condition, except that the top half of the velvet has become a slightly darker shade of burgundy. - hardly noticeable. The attractive, antique mahogany wood frame has a little age-appropriate wear - a few light scratches to the finish and two small chips in the top right corner edge of frame. 1484

Inspirational Antique Religious Bedtime Print “All Asleep But The Angels” Guardian Angels Tucking in Children This is a wonderfully inspiring antique print titled, "All Asleep But The Angels". It’s a peaceful bedtime picture featuring 5 sweet angels tucking in the children to bed. One little angel is seen standing on his tiptoes, peaking over the bedpost at the little girl. Another is holding a doll and the third little angel appears to be sorting and putting away the children’s clothes for the night. A crucifix and a religious picture of Mary and Baby Jesus hand on the wall above the sleeping children. What a pleasant scene! This print is one of eleven, from the Guardian Angel Picture Series. The original painting was made for a children’s book titled, "John and Joan and Their Guardian Angels". This print is No. 76-2. The publisher is St. Anthony Guild Press, Paterson, New Jersey. The original paper backing is mostly intact and includes the title, publisher, item number, history, and a lovely verse that corresponds to the picture. This print is in its original molded wood frame. I believe the frame was originally painted gold, but is now a pretty cream color. It must have been re-painted quite a long time ago because the cream-painted frame ‘looks’ very original. The color of the frame is also very complimentary to the calm and quiet shades of the picture. The print is in excellent original condition. The frame is also in excellent original condition, except for minimal age-appropriate wear to the old cream-colored finish. Original glass and original round metal hanger. Circa 1920’s.
