“Christ Blessing Little Children” X-Lg Antique Victorian Inspirational Religious Jesus Print / Listed Artist: Henry LeJeune This is an extra large, inspirational antique Victorian religious print by the famous English listed artist, Henry LeJeune (1819-1904) This famous, classic print is titled, "Christ Blessing Little Children", also known as, "Suffer Little Children to Come Unto Me". This is a very compelling and inspirational print with beautiful details throughout. The lower left corner of print reads, "Painted by Henry LeJeune". Below the print in the center, it reads, "Lincoln Art Series; J.P. McCaskey, Publisher, Lancaster, Pa.". In the lower right below the print it reads, "From Original Artist Proof Engraving". This special Holy picture with Christ blessing the precious little babies evokes a heartwarming feeling. The print is in excellent original condition with original matting, glass, and wire hanger. The decorative wood and gesso frame is elaborate and very compelling to the print. The frame has a gold inset, molded wood with original black paint and crusty gold gesso with beading. Circa 1910.

***I’ve included below a short BIO about the FAMOUS LISTED ARTIST, HENRY LeJEUNE:

"The British artist Henry Lejeune was born in 1819. He was known for painting figurative and rural country scenes and his sentimental depictions of children established a trend which was followed by many artists in the 19th century. Many of his subjects were views of the Thames and the coasts of Holland. In the period 1840 to 1850 he also painted some historical and biblical subjects.

In 1845, Lejeune became a drawing master at the Royal Academy and, in 1848, he was elevated to the position of curator. He became an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1863.

From 1840-1894 he exhibited at the Royal Academy and his work was also shown at Suffolk Street and at the British Institution. His works can now be seen in many museums and collections, including the Manchester City and Salford Art Galleries. Henry Lejeune died in 1894."

~ I’ve cited this bio from the following website: En.EasyArt.com/Content/

***I’ve also included a COMPLETE BIO OF ARTIST, HENRY LeJEUNE:

"A history and genre painter, was born in London on 12 December 1819, the son of Anthony Le Jeune, a professional musician of Flemish origin. Le Jeune hailed from a musical family, his grandfather and brothers also being musicians. His sister developed an interest in photography, working in Italy. At a young age, Le Jeune expressed a desire to be an artist, and his family encouraged him to study the collections in the British Museum. In 1834 he was admitted to the Royal Academy Schools; there, after obtaining four silver medals in succession, he exhibited his first work in 1840, Joseph Interpreting the Dream of Pharaoh's Chief Butler. In 1841 he earned the gold medal for his Samson Bursting his Bonds, exhibited at the British Institution in 1842. He married Dorothy Lewis (fl. 1820–1900), daughter of James Dalton Lewis, a lieutenant in the Royal Navy, on 21 June 1844, and together they had five sons and three daughters.

Le Jeune worked in both oil and watercolour. He exhibited eighty-four pictures at the Royal Academy between 1840 and 1894, and twenty-one at the British Institution between 1842 and 1863. Early in his career Le Jeune painted biblical themes, such as the Liberation of the Slaves (1847), purchased by Prince Albert and now in the Royal Collection at Osborne House, as well as literary themes often drawn from Shakespeare (Prospero and Miranda, 1844) or Spenser (Una and the Lion, 1842). In the 1850s, however, he began to devote himself to genre scenes, especially depictions of children, and it is for these works that Le Jeune gained his greatest measure of fame. In 1858 the Art Journal commented that, ‘whatever merits his other pictures possess, his real strength lies in his representations of those "small folk"’ (p. 267). Subjects such as Early Sorrow from 1869 (Royal Holloway College) and Children with Toy Boat (Manchester City Galleries) from 1865 characterize these works, which were praised for their ‘truth, beauty, and natural expression’.

While Le Jeune continued to exhibit works at the Royal Academy and the Society (later Royal Society) of British Artists, he was appointed headmaster of the morning class at the Government School of Design at Somerset House. He held this post until 1848, when he was appointed curator of the painting school of the Royal Academy, an office that allowed him to teach painting. Le Jeune held this post until 1863. That year he was elected an associate of the Royal Academy, and although he never achieved the rank of academician, in 1886 he was named an honorary retired associate.

Le Jeune remained in London his entire life, retiring to Hampstead about 1864. He died at his home, 155 Goldhurst Terrace, Hampstead, on 5 October 1904, and was buried at Kensal Green cemetery."

~ I’ve cited this bio from a very informative website / blog: GoldenAgePaintings.Blogspot.com/2008/04/henry-l-le-jeune-eft.html

*** Here’s a little INFO ABOUT THE SCENE itself, "CHRIST BLESSING LITTLE CHILDREN:

Some parents or nurses brought little children to Christ, that he should touch them, in token of his blessing them. It does not appear that they needed bodily cures, nor were they capable of being taught: but those who had the care of them believed that Christ's blessing would do their souls good; therefore they brought them to him. Jesus ordered that they should be brought to him, and that nothing should be said or done to hinder it. Children should be directed to the Saviour as soon as they are able to understand his words. Also, we must receive the kingdom of God as little children; we must stand affected to Christ and his grace, as little children to their parents, nurses, and teachers. (Mk 10:17-22)

~ This was cited from: BibleGateway.com

***Also I’ve also included a wonderful prayer titled, "A Prayer for Children" and a quote from the Bible below that:

O God our heavenly Father, who lovest mankind, and art most merciful and compassionate, have mercy upon thy servants for whom I humbly pray thee, and commend to thy gracious care and protection. Be thou, O God, their guide and guardian in all their endeavors, lead them in the path of thy truth, and draw them nearer to thee, that they may lead a godly and righteous life in thy love and fear; doing thy will in all things. Give them grace that they may be temperate, industrious, diligent, devout and charitable. Defend them against the assaults of the enemy, and grant them wisdom and strength to resist all temptation and corruption of this life; and direct them in the way of salvation, through the merits of thy Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, and the intercessions of his Holy Mother and thy blessed saints. Amen.

"Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them. But Jesus said, 'Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.'" (Matthew 19:13-14)

It is said that the little child that Jesus had on his lap when he said this was St. Ignatios.

1322

Antique Religious House Blessing w/ Jesus Print “God Bless Our Home” This is a lovely antique religious house blessing print titled, "God Bless Our Home". The way this piece is portrayed depicts a charming little cottage in the bottom center of the print with a picture of Jesus above, almost as though he’s watching over he house from above. His picture, which displays the Sacred Heart, is separate from the blessing, which could be considered the matting. It’s pretty interesting how the center matting appears to be in the shape of a picture frame with a nice decorative chain link hanger. The ‘hanger’ is linked to the beautiful scrollwork that decorates the top of the print. There’s even a faint, but fancy, triangular-shaped design pattern to the full background of this print. The way this print was uniquely colored almost gives the look of an airbrushed-effect to the scrollwork, house, and landscape. The lettering remains bold in color with fancy Old English text. This print and matting are both in excellent original condition. Original, gold-painted molded wood frame. The decorative frame is also in excellent original condition. Original glass and paper backing. Old string hanger. Circa 1920’s.

“Now We Fold Our Hands And Pray” Inspirational Antique Print of Guardian Angels & Family all Praying Together This is a heart-warming antique print from ‘The Guardian Angel Picture Series’, titled, "Now We Fold Our Hands And Pray". This picture is filled with a multitude of wonderful, charming details. Everywhere you look something interesting is going on. This inspirational scene features two adult guardian angels standing in the corner of the room praying along with a mother and her two children. A bible sits on the couch beside the mother and little boy. Two more angelic angels are seen playing with the little boy’s toy clown and tucking in the girl’s doll to bed. It’s very sweet. Above the family, hanging on the wall, are three religious pictures of Mary and Jesus. A second bible sits, displayed on the bookcase. Another great detail that cannot be forgotten is the family cat, seen praying beside the mother’s feet (maybe she’s just licking her paws, but let us pretend, at least, that she’s praying). This print is in excellent original condition with bright, lovely colors throughout. The original molded wood frame retains its original cream-colored finish. The original paper backing provides a lot of interesting information about this print, including a blessing that matches the picture and the publisher, "St. Anthony Guild Press; Patterson, New Jersey". (see photo) Original glass and old brass hanger. This piece would make a wonderful addition to any baby’s nursery or child’s room. Circa 1920’s.

1433

Rare Antique Religious Priest Motto Blessing “To Be A Priest” All Hand-Done / Artist: Rev. Timothy Shannon, T.O.R. This is a rare and very unique antique religious motto titled, "To be a Priest". This is not a print. Both the illustrations on the matting and the motto are all hand-done by artist and Father Reverend Timothy Shannon, T.O.R. (1909-1985). I believe Shannon lived and was active in Cambria County, Pennsylvania. The words in this sentiment are beautifully written and would certainly ring true for most Priests. The Reverend signed his name, along with initials, near the top of the matting in fancy Old English lettering. An interesting detail is that the artist emphasized certain profound words in bold print throughout this motto, such as the words, ‘Priest’, ‘blest’, ‘Christ’, ‘God’, Divine’, ‘Prayer’, ‘seek’, and ‘apart’. The artist / Reverend created a nice arbor-type border framing the motto with grapevines and grapes adorning the arbor. This is a most unusual mixed media motto done with pen and ink and watercolors. Shimmery, gold highlights throughout. Above the artist’s name at the top is a picture of a Holy Chalice with the letters, "IHS", written within. The motto and matting are in excellent original condition, with the very slightest bit of waviness to it. Original, gold-painted molded wood frame. The frame is also in excellent original condition with minimal age-appropriate wear to the gold finish. Original glass, paper backing, and old wire hanger. The original framer’s label, "Charles M. Heritage; Correct Picture Framing; 407 Broadway; Camden, N.J.", remains intact on the paper backing. This wonderful, divine, and special motto would truly make a great gift for that blessed Priest in your life! Circa 1920’s.

*** I’ve included, below, some interesting information about THE MEANING BEHIND A CHALICE, as well as THE MEANING OF THE INITIALS, ‘IHS’:

A chalice is a standing cup, a drinking vessel, used to hold sacramental wine during Holy Communion or The Lord’s Supper. The symbol of the Holy Chalice is open to interpretations, as there are many.

‘IHS’ is a symbolic monogram of Christ used by the Roman Catholic Church. The initials, ‘IHS’ stand for the shortened name of Jesus Christ in Latin. IHS is an ancient monogram (or letter symbol) for Jesus that dates back to the first century. The letter I means: Iesus and is Latin for the English word: JESUS. The letter H means: Hominum and is Latin for the English word: OF MEN. The letter S means: Salvator and is Latin for the English word: SAVIOR. So in conclusion, the initials, ‘IHS’ stand for the words ‘Jesus Savior of Men’. The symbol originated in Rome with the early Christians, and was popularized in the fifteenth century by Franciscan disciple Bernardine of Sienna, who promoted it as a symbol of peace. There is, however, good evidence that the initials were used to represent Bacchus, the god of wine, who early Christians identified with Jesus.
