1454

Pair of Inspirational Antique Prints of Guardian Angels & Family at Bedtime This is a pair of charming antique Guardian Angel prints.

*"Now We Fold Our Hands And Pray": This is a heart-warming antique print from ‘The Guardian Angel Picture Series’, titled, "Now We Fold Our Hands And Pray". This picture is filled with a multitude of wonderful, charming details. Everywhere you look something interesting is going on. This inspirational scene features two adult guardian angels standing in the corner of the room praying along with a mother and her two children. A bible sits on the couch beside the mother and little boy. Two more angelic angels are seen playing with the little boy’s toy clown and tucking in the girl’s doll to bed. It’s very sweet. Above the family, hanging on the wall, are three religious pictures of Mary and Jesus. A second bible sits, displayed on the bookcase. Another great detail that cannot be forgotten is the family cat, seen praying beside the mother’s feet (maybe she’s just licking her paws, but let us pretend atleast that she’s praying). This print is in excellent original condition with bright, lovely colors throughout. The original molded wood frame retains its original cream-colored finish. The original paper backing provides a lot of interesting information about this print, including a blessing that matches the picture and the publisher, "St. Anthony Guild Press; Patterson, New Jersey". (see photo) Original glass and old brass hanger. This piece would make a wonderful addition to any baby’s nursery or child’s room. Circa 1920's.

*"All Asleep But The Angels": This is a wonderfully inspiring antique print titled, "All Asleep But The Angels". It’s a peaceful bedtime picture featuring 5 sweet angels tucking in the children to bed. One little angel is seen standing on his tiptoes, peaking over the bedpost at the little girl. Another is holding a doll and the third little angel appears to be sorting and putting away the children’s clothes for the night. A crucifix and a religious picture of Mary and Baby Jesus hand on the wall above the sleeping children. What a pleasant scene! This print is one of eleven, from the Guardian Angel Picture Series. The original painting was made for a children’s book titled, "John and Joan and Their Guardian Angels". This print is No. 76-2. The publisher is St. Anthony Guild Press, Paterson, New Jersey. The original paper backing is mostly intact and includes the title, publisher, item number, history, and a lovely verse that corresponds to the picture. This print is in its original molded wood frame. I believe the frame was originally painted gold, but is now a pretty cream color. It must have been re-painted quite a long time ago because the cream-painted frame ‘looks’ very original. The color of the frame is also very complimentary to the calm and quiet shades of the picture. The print is in excellent original condition. The frame is also in excellent original condition, except for minimal age-appropriate wear to the old cream-colored finish. Original glass and original round metal hanger. Circa 1920’s.

1433

Rare Antique Religious Priest Motto Blessing “To Be A Priest” All Hand-Done / Artist: Rev. Timothy Shannon, T.O.R. This is a rare and very unique antique religious motto titled, "To be a Priest". This is not a print. Both the illustrations on the matting and the motto are all hand-done by artist and Father Reverend Timothy Shannon, T.O.R. (1909-1985). I believe Shannon lived and was active in Cambria County, Pennsylvania. The words in this sentiment are beautifully written and would certainly ring true for most Priests. The Reverend signed his name, along with initials, near the top of the matting in fancy Old English lettering. An interesting detail is that the artist emphasized certain profound words in bold print throughout this motto, such as the words, ‘Priest’, ‘blest’, ‘Christ’, ‘God’, Divine’, ‘Prayer’, ‘seek’, and ‘apart’. The artist / Reverend created a nice arbor-type border framing the motto with grapevines and grapes adorning the arbor. This is a most unusual mixed media motto done with pen and ink and watercolors. Shimmery, gold highlights throughout. Above the artist’s name at the top is a picture of a Holy Chalice with the letters, "IHS", written within. The motto and matting are in excellent original condition, with the very slightest bit of waviness to it. Original, gold-painted molded wood frame. The frame is also in excellent original condition with minimal age-appropriate wear to the gold finish. Original glass, paper backing, and old wire hanger. The original framer’s label, "Charles M. Heritage; Correct Picture Framing; 407 Broadway; Camden, N.J.", remains intact on the paper backing. This wonderful, divine, and special motto would truly make a great gift for that blessed Priest in your life! Circa 1920’s.

*** I’ve included, below, some interesting information about THE MEANING BEHIND A CHALICE, as well as THE MEANING OF THE INITIALS, ‘IHS’:

A chalice is a standing cup, a drinking vessel, used to hold sacramental wine during Holy Communion or The Lord’s Supper. The symbol of the Holy Chalice is open to interpretations, as there are many.

‘IHS’ is a symbolic monogram of Christ used by the Roman Catholic Church. The initials, ‘IHS’ stand for the shortened name of Jesus Christ in Latin. IHS is an ancient monogram (or letter symbol) for Jesus that dates back to the first century. The letter I means: Iesus and is Latin for the English word: JESUS. The letter H means: Hominum and is Latin for the English word: OF MEN. The letter S means: Salvator and is Latin for the English word: SAVIOR. So in conclusion, the initials, ‘IHS’ stand for the words ‘Jesus Savior of Men’. The symbol originated in Rome with the early Christians, and was popularized in the fifteenth century by Franciscan disciple Bernardine of Sienna, who promoted it as a symbol of peace. There is, however, good evidence that the initials were used to represent Bacchus, the god of wine, who early Christians identified with Jesus.

The initials, "P.R.A." stand for, ‘President of the Royal Academy’. Original glass, old wood backing, and old wire hanger. Circa 1863.

*** I’ve included below, a short and interesting BIO OF THE FAMOUS LISTED ARTIST, SIR CHARLES LOCK EASTLAKE, P.R.A.:

Sir Charles Lock Eastlake, P.R.A. (born Nov. 17,1793, died Dec. 24, 1865) was a famous English painter, gallery director, collector, and writer of the early 19th century. The abbreviation, P.R.A., stands for: President of the Royal Academy. Sir Charles Eastlake "dominated the early Victorian art establishment, quickly earning honor after honor, and with them, positions of increasing power. He became an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1827 when he was 30, an Academician three years later, and the Academy librarian in 1842. His three greatest positions of power and prestige followed. In 1844 he became secretary of the committee in charge of selecting paintings for the newly rebuilt Houses of Parliament, in 1850 President of the Royal Academy, and in 1855 Director of the National Gallery. He and his wife, Lady Eastlake, were the great power couple of the contemporary art world." In 1849, he married Elizabeth Rigby, an art historian and translator of German art histories, forming a formidable art history writing partnership.

"As someone who embodied the aristocratic, conservative, and rather mediocre art establishment in his own person, Eastlake is perhaps best remembered today as the polar opposite of John Ruskin, advocate of both Turner's later experimental art and the young anti-establishment Pre-Raphaelites. In a small way this opposition is ironic, since both men studied with Samuel Prout, whose urban picturesque great influenced Ruskin's early drawings. In addition to their opposing views on many areas of the arts, the Eastlakes, particularly Lady Eastlake, led a campaign against Ruskin after his wife left him, secured an annulment, and married Ruskin's protogé, Millais.

Eastlake attended Charterhouse, one of the seven prominent public schools, before leaving to become a student of Benjamin Haydon, after which he entered the RA schools and studied under Henry Fuseli. He visited Italy in 1816 and Greece in 1818, living in Rome from 1818 to 1830 where he began to paint Italian genre subjects of the sort exemplified by The Salutation to the Aged Friar."

*** I’ve also included below, a short BIO OF THE FAMOUS ENGRAVER / LISTED ARTIST, SAMUEL SARTAIN:

"Samuel Sartain was one of the best-known steel engravers in the United States. He was the son of the late, John Sartain." Samuel was born the year 1830 in Philadelphia, PA and died in the year 1906. Throughout Samuel’s early career, "he studied mezzotint engravings with his father and engraved after paintings by C. W. Peale, Thomas Sully, and others."
