1232

Rare Victorian Print, The Annunciation, Mary & Gabriel / Artist: Fra Angelico This is a rare and special Victorian print titled, "The Annunciation" by famous early Italian Renaissance painter, Fra Angelico (c.1395-1455). In Italy, he became known as "Il Beato Angelico", meaning "The Blessed Angelico", which was in reference to his skills in painting religious subjects. He was also known to his contemporaries as "Fra Giovanni da Fiesole", meaning "Friar or Father John from Fiesole". This famous scene depicts the Virgin Mary with Archangel Gabriel. Gabriel is visiting Mary to reveal to her that she will give birth to Jesus. Gabriel has been called "The Angel of Life", and is said to appear to people when they are on the brink of a new beginning, especially a conception or birth. Gabriel is known to be the bearer of Good News! This inspirational piece is in excellent original condition with great detail. It is hand-colored with special gold highlights. At the bottom of the print, there are two sets of words written in Italian. I cannot make out the top row of letters, but I believe the bottom row of letters read as follows: "VIRGINIS INTACTE CVM VENER IS ANTE FIGVRAM PRFTEREVMDO CAVE NE SILEATVR AVE". The frame and glass are original to the print and the wood frame is painted gold. Original wood back. The original paper backing is torn, but there is writing at the top and bottom that is fully intact. The top reads: "T.W. Norman & Co., Art Dealers, Pictures and Frames, 44 Bromfield St., Factory 47 Field, Boston". The bottom reads: "2540 FIRENZE. – Museo di S. Marco. – L’Annunziazione della Vergine. Beato Angelico." (2540 Florence - The Announcement of the Virgin – The Blessed Angelico) Old, original wire hanger. Circa late 1800’s.

"Rest on the Flight into Egypt" Mary Breastfeeding Baby Jesus Antique Print This picture is known as "Rest on the Flight into Egypt". It is a small, yet unique and classic print of Mary holding and breastfeeding Baby Jesus with her sacred milk, as he lies on a cushion. This endearing print resonates with love, tenderness, and affection. This illustration originally took place at what is famously known as ‘The Milk Grotto Church’ of our Lady located in Bethlehem, a place traditionally described as the site where the Virgin Mary stopped to breastfeed the Baby Jesus during the ‘flight’ to Egypt. It is said that this picture represents the special status of the Virgin Mary’s body, as well as the connection between Mary’s sacred milk and the power to heal and perform miracles! This was one of the most popular pictures of the Virgin Mary, originally painted during the 14th and 15th century. This print is nicely detailed and colorful. Bottom right hand corner has a very small signature, too small to read – see photo. Original gold wood frame with decorative design. Old glass and original wire hanger. This piece is in excellent original condition, except for the original paper backing is very slightly torn. Circa 1920’s.

All of their faces are exquisitely detailed! The colors are bright and vivid. Both the Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus have a halo and are bathed in a heavenly light from above. The picture and frame are both in excellent original condition with the original hanger and labels on the back. The top label reads, "Virgin and Six Angels By Botticelli". The middle label towards the bottom reads, "For Elizabeth + Buckstien". The bottom label reads, "From Aunt Nell". Circa 1920’s.

*** I’ve included below some VERY INTERESTING INFORMATION ABOUT THIS PICTURE, "THE MADONNA OF THE POMEGRANATE":

The Madonna of the Pomegranate is a painting by the Italian Renaissance master Sandro Botticelli, circa 1487. It is housed in the Uffizi Gallery of Florence, Italy.

The picture's title is explained by the pomegranate in Mary's hand: this could be understood as symbolizing Christ's Passion, the wealth of seeds conveying the fullness of Christ's suffering. It could also be understood as a symbol of heretical art and signify the fertility of Jesus. A comparison of this painting with Botticelli's earlier tondo, Madonna of the Magnificat, reveals that the artist has now arranged the angels symmetrically, thereby avoiding the compositional difficulties of the older depiction.

The Christ Child, whose hand is raised in blessing, is lying securely in the arms of Mary, but the sad, melancholy expression on the faces of mother and child are intended to remind the observer of the torments the Son of God will suffer in the future. The angels are venerating Mary with lilies and garlands of roses. The Rosary is a prayer that was created in its present form in the 15th century, and rapidly became widespread. The beginning of this prayer is embroidered on the left angel's stola: AVE MARIA GRAZIA PLENA ("Hail Mary, full of grace").

*** Here is a short little BIO ABOUT FAMOUS LISTED ARTIST, SANDRO BOTTICELLI:

Original name ALESSANDRO DI MARIANO FILIPEPI (b. 1445, Florence [Italy]--d. May 17, 1510, Florence), Florentine early Renaissance painter whose Birth of Venus (c. 1485) and Primavera (1477-78) are often said to epitomize for modern viewers the spirit of the Renaissance. His ecclesiastical commissions included work for all the major churches of Florence and for the Sistine Chapel in Rome. His name is derived from his elder brother Giovanni, a pawnbroker, who was called Il Botticello ("The Little Barrel").

Although he was one of the most individual painters of the Italian Renaissance, Sandro Botticelli remained little known for centuries after his death. Then his work was rediscovered late in the 19th century by a group of artists in England known as the Pre-Raphaelites.

Born Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi in Florence in 1445, Botticelli was apprenticed to a goldsmith. Later he was a pupil of the painter Fra Filippo Lippi. He spent all his life in Florence except for a visit to Rome in 1481-82. There he painted wall frescoes in the Sistine Chapel of the Vatican.

“The Annunciation” Antique Print of Mary & Archangel Gabriel w/ 3 Scenes of Adam & Eve This is a special antique print of "The Annunciation". Artists have portrayed this famous scene in many ways, but this particular picture is quite unique and hard to find. This picture features Archangel Gabriel and the Virgin Mary. Gabriel is visiting Mary to reveal to her that she will give birth to Jesus. The scenery behind them is picturesque and the fine details of the Temple that surround them are incredible. Both of their expressions are captivating and inspiring. This picture is vibrant and colorful. On this same print, below Mary and Gabriel, are three famous scenes of Adam and Eve. The first scene depicts God warning Adam (while Eve is sleeping) not to touch the apples. The second scene depicts both Adam and Eve plucking the apple from the Forbidden Tree with the serpent (devil) wrapped around the tree. The third and last picture shows both Adam and Eve feeling ashamed for their actions as they are banished forever from the Garden of Eden. An angel hovers behind them. These three black and white scenes below have great detail for their small size. Original, gold-painted, wood frame with a textured design and black trim. Original glass and old wire hanger. The original paper backing is intact with very minor tears. The original label on the back reads, "Henry Schultheis Company, 42 Fulton St., N.Y.C.; Paintings, Prints, & Framing".
