Sweet Baby Sleeping, Antique Print / Listed Artist: Maud Tousey Fangel This is an adorable antique print of a sleeping baby, by famous listed artist, "Maud Tousey Fangel". The artist’s signature is in the lower right corner. The bottom left corner of print, reads, "G.P. 8124 Litho in U.S.A. Co.". This print captures the delightful appeal and innocence of a sleeping child. Charming details and wonderful soft colors. The print is in excellent original condition. Original, complimentary, decorative molded wood frame. The frame is also in excellent original condition, along with original glass and wire hanger. Circa 1920’s.

***I have included below, some interesting facts and information on this artist, MAUD TOUSEY FANGEL:

In the 1930s, '40s, and '50s -- if you saw a sketch or portrait of a child on the cover of Ladies Home Journal or Woman's Home Companion, or inside the magazines advertising, say, Colgate's Talc Powder, Cream of Wheat, or Squibb's Cod Liver Oil, you were probably seeing the work of Maud Tousey Fangel. For a good part of the first half of the twentieth century Ms. Fangel was the children's artist in our country -- her illustrations of ruddy-cheeked, doe-eyed, curly-locked children were everywhere. They set the standard for their day and made Ms. Fangel a kind of celebrity -- the subject of frequent feature articles and a much in demand children's portrait painter.

Maud Tousey was born on January 1st, 1881, the daughter of a Professor of Divinity at Tufts College. She began drawing in earnest when she was a teenager. After college, she was presented her portfolio to an art director of Good Housekeeping, Guy Fangel, who gave her her first commercial assignments and later proposed marriage to her. Their son, Lloyd, began Ms. Fangel's fascination with drawing babies -- she did more than 1500 pictures of him before he was three -- and later she would immortalize his face as the boy on the Cracker Jack box.

Many of Ms. Fangel's pictures were done in pastels, which allowed her to capture the movements of her young subjects in swift, impressionistic strokes. Most of Ms. Fangel's models were children from poor families, from orphanages, and settlement houses. Unaware of this, one newspaper referred to these children as "glamour babies." But Ms. Fangel understood the youngsters who sat and wiggled and dozed in the high chair for her a little more deeply than the correspondent: "I have a strange, persistent feeling that babies have a consciousness that we do not possess," she wrote. "They seem not yet to have lost an intelligence brought with them from another world. They are still wrapped in the mystery of their source."

18001311

Famous Maxfield Parrish Inspirational Antique Print “The Dinkey-Bird” This is an inspirational antique Maxfield Parrish print. This picture is considered one of Maxfield Parrish’s finest works. It is an unusually small size picture and is famously titled, "The Dinkey-Bird". Across the bottom of the print reads, "Charles Scribner’s Song, Edward Cross Co. Publisher". This print is in excellent original condition. The original wood frame has an interesting texture and retains the original gold finish with a nice old patina. Original glass and wire hanger. Circa 1920’s.

*** I have included, below, some interesting information on the history of Maxfield Parrish’s famous painting, THE DINKEY-BIRD:

Not only is this picture considered one of Maxfield Parrish’s finest works, but it’s quite significant in other ways as well. The book for which this picture was commissioned in 1904, titled, "Eugene Field’s Poems of Childhood", was the first in which Parrish’s work was reproduced in full color. This picture was also among the first of Parrish’s paintings to be made available as a color print. It is said that Parrish’s intention was to capture in this image "the spirit of the swing, just the catch in the turn of the motion". In other words, he surely captured the spirit of childhood.

- This article above has been cited from a book titled, "The Maxfield Parrish Pop-Up Book".

*** I’ve also included some interesting facts about the artist, MAXFIELD PARRISH:

Maxfield Parrish (1870 - 1966) was an American painter and illustrator. Born Frederick Maxfield Parrish in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he began drawing for his own amusement early in his life. He went on to pursue a career that was to last for many decades and effectively shape the Golden Age of Illustration, and the future of American visual art in general. Launched by a commission to illustrate Kenneth Grahame’s The Walls Were as of Jasper in 1897, his repertoire was to include many prestigious projects such as Eugene Field’s Poems of Childhood (1904) and the traditional Arabian Nights (1909).

Androgynous nudes in fantastical settings were an often-recurring theme. He continued in this venue for the rest of his life, living comfortably off the royalties brought in by the production of posters and calendars featuring his works. Parrish was famous for the dazzlingly luminous colors that marked much of his artwork; the shade "Parrish blue" was coined in acknowledgement. He achieved this result by means of a special technique involving several coats of oil and varnish applied to his paintings. It is impossible to categorize Parrish’s work, since he was part of no traditional movement or school, and developed a truly original style.

Maxfield Parrish was the most popular American artist from the turn of the century until Norman Rockwell succeeded him in the 1940’s. Of Parrish, Mr. Rockwell said, "Maxfield Parrish was certainly one of our most prominent illustrators and hardly a home in America existed that didn’t have a Maxfield Parrish print. I’m an illustrator. Maxfield Parrish was a painter-illustrator. He was in the Golden Age of Illustration. When I was in art school I admired him. He was one of my gods."

Parrish continued painting until he was about 90 years old and died at age 96. Each new generation seems to rediscover the magic and romance of Parrish art and some of his prints now command prices that reach into many thousands of dollars. Fortunately, many images may still be obtained at modest cost.

Delightful & Inspirational Antique Victorian Print of Sweet Young Girl Kneeling & Praying at her Bedroom Window, Morning Prayer This is a wonderful, inspirational antique Victorian print. The scene features a sweet little girl kneeling down for what appears to be Morning Prayer. Her bedroom is beautifully decorated in beautiful Victorian furniture, linen, and flowers. This print is bright, vibrant, and rich in color. Through the window is a view of a large church and a little Robin bird perched outside, greeting the child. Rays of light shine through the window onto the girl, as a Bible sits beside her. The bottom left hand corner of this print reads, "Copyrighted by Geo Stinson & Co., 1878". The bottom right hand corner reads, "Published by Geo Stinson & Co., Portland, ME.". This print is in excellent original condition, except for a very small discoloration on the little girl’s nightgown and two little dots across from that. On the back of this piece, there are two nice old original boards, but with a small separation in-between. It appears that this small separation slightly exposed the print to natural, age-appropriate wear. However, these small imperfections do not detract from the magnificent beauty of this piece. The frame is original to the print. It is molded wood with original antique grained finish. The finish is rich in color with nice highlights. The frame is in excellent original condition with slight age-appropriate wear. Nice old, original glass, original wood backing, and old wire hanger. Circa 1878.

1423

Guardian Angel Helping a Young Girl Across Wooden Plank w/ a Serpent / Snake Below, Large Rare Antique Print This is a hard to find, magnificent and large antique lithograph print of a heavenly Guardian Angel helping a young little girl get across a rickety small wooden plank with a serpent waiting and hiding for them at the end. This is not the typical and classical picture of the Guardian Angel helping the two children cross the rickety bridge, although it does remind you of it. In all my travels, I’ve never seen this picture before with just the little girl, nor have I ever seen this picture represented with the plank and serpent. This rare scene features just the little girl, holding the Guardian Angel’s hand and with her other hand, she holds a wooden walking stick. It’s interesting to note that as the child walks across the narrow wooden plank, you can tell from her expression that she is obviously oblivious to the danger in front of her - the sneaky slithering evil serpent. Thankfully, her Guardian Angel sees it and protects her from harm. Both of their faces are charming and the bright, rich, and colorful details throughout make this piece all the more special. In addition, the lush, green landscape adds a nice sense of depth to this delightful scene. This large and captivating print is in excellent original condition. The molded wood frame retains the original black finish and is also in excellent original condition. Original glass and old twisted wire and string hanger. Missing the paper backing. Circa 1910.

“Now We Fold Our Hands And Pray” Inspirational Antique Print of Guardian Angels & Family all Praying Together This is a heart-warming antique print from ‘The Guardian Angel Picture Series’, titled, "Now We Fold Our Hands And Pray". This picture is filled with a multitude of wonderful, charming details. Everywhere you look something interesting is going on. This inspirational scene features two adult guardian angels standing in the corner of the room praying along with a mother and her two children. A bible sits on the couch beside the mother and little boy. Two more angelic angels are seen playing with the little boy’s toy clown and tucking in the girl’s doll to bed. It’s very sweet. Above the family, hanging on the wall, are three religious pictures of Mary and Jesus. A second bible sits, displayed on the bookcase. Another great detail that cannot be forgotten is the family cat, seen praying beside the mother’s feet (maybe she’s just licking her paws, but let us pretend atleast that she’s praying). This print is in excellent original condition with bright, lovely colors throughout. The original molded wood frame retains its original cream-colored finish. The original paper backing provides a lot of interesting information about this print, including a blessing that matches the picture and the publisher, "St. Anthony Guild Press; Patterson, New Jersey".
