Silly Pug Dog Smoking Pipe 'Pas De Tabac' Mixed Media Antique Watercolor & Oil Painting / Listed Artist: Charles Alfred Meurer This is a whimsical antique painting by famous listed artist, Charles Alfred Meurer (1865-1955). This charming work of art features a dog smoking a pipe. This is a combination watercolor and oil paints. It is titled, "Pas De Tabac" and signed, "CAM" at the bottom. The original wood frame is very complimentary and retains a wonderful old patina. Original glass, paper backing, and hanger. Circa 1910.

*** I've included below, some interesting information about this famous listed artist, CHARLES ALFRED MEURER:

"Born in Germany of American parents, Charles Meurer became the last living link to the heyday of the trompe l'oeil painting style. He settled in Terrace Park, Ohio, a suburb of Cincinnati, and maintained a studio there for many years. He continued to paint after both of his legs were amputated, asserting that he still had his brushes and his spirit. Many of his trompe l'oeil works have reproductions of money, and he has also done painting with hunting motifs that are similar to work by Michael Harnett, the man credited with founding the trompe l'oeil style in America.

Meurer was raised in Clarksville, Tennessee. In his youth as a beginning artist, he was commissioned by Adolph Ochs, editor of the Chattanooga Times newspaper to paint a still life incorporating the front page of the paper with a figure surrounded by books and other objects of editorial wisdom. Meurer succeeded and used this theme in many subsequent paintings.

This mode of still life painting was later described as editorial-sanctum still life, something that emphasizes with appropriate objects authority (books), industry (pen and inkwell) and respectability (money). Many journalism offices today have paintings or copies of them with that motif.

Meurer studied art with Frank Duveneck in Cincinnati and then went to Paris and Lyon for further study in France. In 1886, according to his telling, he was converted to trompe l'oeil painting when he saw the work of Michael Harnett at the Cincinnati Industrial Exposition of 1886. He also recalled seeing rack pictures of John Frederick Peto in Cincinnati art galleries in the 1890s."

1561

A Whimsical Antique Watercolor - Several Children w/ Baby Frolicking & Joining Hands in ‘The Circle of Life’ This is a delightful, inspirational, and very whimsical antique watercolor featuring several happy adorable children and a young baby frolicking in a field. The scene captures the children (3 girls, 3 boys, and a baby) all holding hands in a large circle, which to many people represents, ‘The Circle of Life", although it is not titled that. The beautiful colors in this picture are of soft muted pastels. The artist really captured the feeling and emotion of this scene, as the details throughout are nicely done. Check out the expression on the little boy’s face with the straw hat…so charming! This watercolor is in excellent original condition, except for a very tiny dark spot in the upper left corner. This piece is in its original fancy molded wood frame which retains the original gold finish. The frame is in excellent original condition. Original glass. New wire hanger. Circa 1920’s.

1496

Whimsical Scene of Beautiful Yg Lady Dancing w/ an Angel, Antique Victorian Watercolor / Artist: Mrs R.O. Kohler C. This is a charming and delightful hand-done antique Victorian watercolor, signed by the artist with their initials, "J.H." or "H.J." The initials are interlocking and on top of one another so it’s difficult to make out which initial is of the first and last name. The whimsical scene features a beautiful young lady dancing with a sweet little angel. Both have endearing faces and their playful movement is captivating. The soft pastel colors and lovely details are very appealing. The watercolor is especially desirable in its complimentary, original, oval wood frame. The frame is decorated with a delicately applied metal floral design at the top. There is a tiny bit of this missing. The frame retains its original gold finish, original glass, wire hanger, and original black paper backing with its original label from the frame shop in Philadelphia where this piece was originally sold. Also on the back of the paper backing is a signature which reads, "Mrs. R.O. Kohler C…". (Catstanzha?) (cannot make out her last name - see photo) The watercolor and frame are in excellent original condition, except for the bit of floral decoration I mentioned earlier. This is an enchanting original work of art….A hard to find inspirational Victorian piece. Circa 1880’s.
