This is an exceptionally striking, large and compelling antique Victorian lithograph print titled, "Madonna Sixtina" dated 1873 on the back. Also known as the "Sistine Madonna". This picture was originally painted by the famous Italian Renaissance artist, Raphael Sanzio, in circa 1512–1514. Interestingly, Raphael painted this picture for Pope Julius II as a present to the City of Piacenza, Italy. This picture depicts the Virgin, Child and Saints Sixtus and Barbara. The figures stand on a bed of clouds, framed by curtains. A popular detail at the bottom of this piece is the 2 angels, known as "Little Angels". Another interesting detail about this lithograph is that above each person there are numerous, angelic angel faces shining down. This piece is full of vibrant bright colors. Compelling, expressive faces and wonderful details. Very nice walnut Victorian frame with gold leaf inset. Original glass, paper backing, and wire hanger. The paper backing is torn, but contains several wonderful pieces of history. At the top, is the name of the art dealer that originally sold the lithograph. It reads, "Malcolm G. Stevens, Frames-Pictures-Mirrors, 78 Summer St., Tel, 4112-4113, Arlington, Mass." Below that, are the names of the giver and receiver of this beautiful picture. Dated "April 29, 1873". Towards the bottom, affixed to the paper backing, are 2 paper labels that read, "New York, Max, Jacoby, & Zeller, 70 John Street, MADONNA SIXTINA. Druck u. Verlag y. F. Silber in Berlin Luisen – Sm. 53". This piece is in excellent original condition. Circa 1873.
*Courtesy of Art.com: Raphael (1483 – 1520), one of the most prominent Italian Renaissance painters, created masterpieces that epitomized the High Renaissance ideals of harmony and beauty. From Urbino, Italy, Raphael was admitted to the workshop of the town’s leading painter at age 12 and quickly surpassed his instructor. Possessing a remarkable command of depth, perspective, light, and shadow, Raphael imparted warmth and serenity to his magnificently life-like figures. His most brilliant works include the stanzas inside the Vatican, and Madonnas which he portrayed with human emotions, as no artist had previously done. Pope Julius II had such high regard for the grace and perfection of Raphael’s work that at one point, he was inclined to make him Cardinal. |
