| This is a striking antique Victorian print with incredibly vibrant colors of Apollo in his chariot preceded by the Dawn Goddess, Aurora, bringing light into the world, by famous Bolognese artist, Guido Reni (c.1575-1642). The technique of this painting is called a Fresco and it was originally completed in 1614. The title of this print is known as "L’Aurora" and it is considered Reni’s most renowned work! The artist’s vision depicts young Apollo driving the golden Sun chariot, drawn by 4 horses that leap into the air and bear to earth the light of the new day. Dawn precedes the course of the Sun. She drives the darkness of the night away. It was Dawn’s job to ride to Mt. Olympus each day to announce the approach of her brother, Sol (the Sun). Between Dawn and the chariot of the Sun, there is a winged putto (angel), Twilight, who bears a torch with flame. The young women attendants dancing around the Sun and next to Apollo are called "The Hours". This is an outstanding and incredibly detailed print with bright vibrant colors and lush gold background. It is in excellent condition. The frame is also outstanding and very complimentary to the piece. The original frame is wood. It is faced with fancy rosewood veneer and a decorative rope-turned brass inset. This piece has a beautiful old patina. It retains the original glass, torn paper backing, and wire hanger. This mythological and religious piece is very inspirational and would be a focal point in any room. Circa early 1900’s. |
