Circa: 1919 Condition: Excellent Original Condition Size: Frame Measurements: Height – 27 ¼" Width – 22 ¼" Manufacturer: Arthur Greatorex, 14 Grafton Street, W and Basil Dightons, Savile Row, W. This is a large and very special, antique Victorian mezzotint print with three children, a fancy Victorian wicker birdcage, and a beautiful dove. Although this print is not titled, the actual title is, "The Synnot Children" by the famous listed artist, Joseph Wright of Derby.

 |
His signature can be found in the bottom left of the print, hidden within the picture. I was recently informed that there are probably a dozen of these mezzotint prints of this picture left in the world! This mezzotint is full of details...The children have beautiful faces and their clothing has lovely textures and colors. The scene has a very appealing quality to it. This fancy Victorian mezzotint print is in excellent original condition. In the bottom left of the mezzotint print, is the hand-signed signature in pencil by another famous listed Scottish painter and mezzotint engraver, Henry Macbeth-Raeburn (1860-1947). To explain why there are two famous listed artist's signatures on this picture, Joseph Wright of Derby was the original artist of this picture painted in c.1781. Henry Macbeth-Raeburn re-created this picture as a mezzotint in c.1919. To clarify, the circa of this item for sale is c.1919 not 1781, nor is it newly reproduced. Next to Macbeth-Raeburn's signature is the publisher's info that reads, "London Published 1919 by Arthur Greatorex, 14 Grafton Street, W and Basil Dightons, Savile Row, W." The frame is also very special. It is oak with fancy applied gesso scroll-work. The inner edge of the frame has delicate beading. The frame has a beautiful old original finish with a few small nicks to the gesso here and there. The matting is also fancy with multiple pencil lines that add additional interest and texture. This piece retains its original, old wavy glass and old wire hanger. Missing paper backing. This endearing antique Victorian mezzotint print conveys our oneness with nature and childhood innocence. Circa 1919.
*** I've managed to find some INFORMATION ABOUT THE INTERPRETATION OF THIS PICTURE TITLED, "THE SYNNOT CHILDREN":
"This famous picture represents the three children of Walter Synnot of County Armagh in Ireland, from left to right: Maria, Walter and Marcus. While the painting can be seen as just a depiction of children at play, it has been interpreted by some art historians as reflecting or symbolizing the philosophical concerns of Enlightenment regarding a child's innocence and freedom of spirit through the metaphor of freeing a caged bird. The education of the young, particularly boys, was the subject of much literature and it is interesting that the two boys are the active protagonists in freeing the bird, while Maria clearly expresses degree of sorrow and emotes concern for the dove. Joseph Wright originally painted this picture of the Synnot children on canvas in circa 1781. They are the children of Walter Synnot of County Armagh in Ireland. They are Maria, Walter and Marcus. The boys appear to be wearing early versions of a skeleton suit, but with knee breeches. Note that one boy wears a pink suit. Both boys have long hair, one boy's hair is very curly."

*** I've included a small interesting BIO ABOUT THE FAMOUS LISTED ARTIST, JOSEPH WRIGHT of DERBY (1934-1797):
"Joseph Wright (b. Sept. 3, 1734 – d. Aug. 29, 1797), styled Wright of Derby, was an English landscape and portrait painter. He has been acclaimed as "the first professional painter to express the spirit of the Industrial Revolution." Wright is notable for his use of Chiaroscuro effect, which emphasizes the contrast of light and dark, and for his paintings of candle-lit subjects. Many of Wright's paintings are owned by the Derby city council, and are on display at the Derby Museum and Art Gallery, from where they are occasionally loaned to other galleries.
Wright spent most of his life in Derby. He worked in Liverpool from 1769 to 1771; he also traveled to Italy, arriving in Rome in February 1774 and returning to Derby in September 1775; then he attempted, unsuccessfully, to emulate Gainsbourgh as a fashionable portrait painter in Bath between 1775-7. However, only Italy left any lasting impression on his work and the fiery subjects of Vesuvius and the Fireworks in Rome (Girandola), extended his interest in the effects of light into an altogether vaster, outdoor scale.
Joseph Wright married Hannah Swift in 1773 and they had six children, three of whom died in infancy. Hannah died in 1790 but Wright continued to paint up until his final year. He became increasingly asthmatic and nervous about the house and for these complaints he was treated by his friend Dr Darwin. He died at his new home at No.28 Queen Street, Derby, where he spent his final months with his two daughters, on 29th August 1797.
The name "Wright of Derby" was applied to him by reviewers of the Society of Artists' exhibitions in the 1760's, to distinguish him from the Liverpool artist, Richard Wright, who was already exhibiting. The American artist Joseph Wright also arrived in England in 1772, making the style "Wright of Derby" even more helpful. He is not known to have complained about the title and it it by this name that his reputation has endured as one of the most original, wide-ranging and talented English artists of the 18th century."

*** I've also included a little INFO ABOUT THE FAMOUS ARTIST/ MEZZOTINT ENGRAVER, HENRY MACBETH-RAEBURN(1860-1947):
(This will help explain why there are two artist's signature on this piece)
"Henry Macbeth-Raeburn (1860-1947) was a noted Scottish painter and mezzotint engraver active in Edinburgh during the 1920's. He was a member of the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of Painters, Etchers, and Engravers. He is known today for his stylish mezzotints after celebrated eighteenth and nineteenth century portraits, which reproduced with accuracy and finesse the glory of these earlier masters. He had a penchant for the paintings of Reynolds, Gainsborough, and Sargent and produced many fine prints after their works."
