Circa: 1920's Condition: Excellent Original Condition Size: Frame Measurements: Height - 19 ¾” Width - 33 ¾” Manufacturer: Morris & Bendien Inc., N.Y.
This is an X-Lg very attractive and special antique religious print depicting Jesus kneeling on the ground beside a large boulder with his hand’s clasped in prayer. What makes this picture so special is the unique size that ultimately exposes the complete panoramic scene rarely captured of "Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane". The colors of this print are unusually bright and each feature is clearly defined. As Jesus gazes up to the Heavens in the dark night sky, a beam of holy light shines down upon him. Although this print is not titled, nor signed by the artist, the title given to this picture is, "Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane" (sometimes titled, ‘Christ in Gethsemane’) and I believe the artist who originally painted this famous scene was, Heinrich Hofmann, but there is a possibility that it could have been artist, E. Goodman. The details of Jesus’ face, body, and surroundings are finely done. His posture and facial expression is brilliantly realistic and colorful. In the background, laying beside a boulder sleeping, are three of Jesus’ disciples. It is most unusual to see these disciples so clearly. It should also be noted that this print has a beautiful texture to it. At the bottom of the print reads the publisher’s name, "Copyright, Morris & Bendien Inc., N.Y.". Nice large original, gold-painted and decorative molded wood frame. Both the print and frame are in excellent original condition. Original glass and original wire hanger. Missing paper backing Circa 1920’s.
*** I’ve included a little interesting INFO about HOFMANN’s INSPIRATION FOR PAINTING:
"Heinrich Hofmann’s religious works are filled with the deep faith that inspired his life and creativity. Painting subjects from literature and mythology, Hofmann (1824 – 1911) is most famous for his paintings of Christ’s life. When his beloved mother died, he was motivated to paint his first large religious work, "The Burial of Christ." Before painting any scene depicting Christ, Hofmann would intently study the Bible. He was adamant that anyone who was not moved to their innermost core while painting religious subjects was not capable of the task. Four of Hofmann’s most famous works now grace New York’s Riverside Church."

*** I’ve also included a short BIO about the artist, HEINRICH HOFMANN:
"Johann Michael Ferdinand Heinrich Hofmann (March 19, 1824-June 23, 1911) was a German historical painter of the late 19th to early 20th century. He was the uncle of the German painter Ludwig von Hofmann. He was born in Darmstadt, Germany and died in Dresden, Germany. He is best known for his many paintings depicting the life of Jesus Christ.
Four of the most famous works of Hofmann are in the possession of the Riverside Church in New York: Christ and the Rich Young Ruler, Christ in Gethsemane, Christ in the Temple and Picture of Christ. According to information of the Riverside Church, the painting Christ in Gethsemane is without much doubt one of the most copied paintings in the world. While he chose his subjects from the whole field of literature and mythology, Hofmann is most widely known for his idealized scenes from the life of Christ. Several of these have been extensively reproduced in engravings, especially his "Christ in the Temple," painted in 1882. Heinrich Hofmann died in 1902.
The religious body of Hofmann’s work has gained in importance in the past years. One of the reasons for the increasing popularity of his artwork is the publication of his paintings and pencil drawings depicting the life of Jesus Christ in The Second Coming of Christ, the interpretation of the Bible by Paramahansa Yogananda, the teacher of Yoga.
Heinrich Hofmann was one of the pre-eminent painters of his time. The Sunday Strand – at that time a very popular British magazine– describes him as the most influential contemporary German painter. Hofmann’s style of painting was unique in its own way but at the same time he based his work on the traditional art of old German, Dutch and Italian masters. While in Rome he also came in touch with the Nazarenes – especially through the influence of Cornelius – but throughout his life he remained faithful to the great examples of the Renaissance. Religious paintings take the center stage in Hofmann’s work; but he also created numerous portraits and pictures that depict mythological and historical topics."
