This is a most beautiful "white brass", or silver on brass, coal basket purchased some time ago from the estate of a couple who had spent many years in the Orient - this is not an export piece.
The basket appears to be silver, except in certain lighting where it looks as if it is a very pale brass. There are engraved figures of people, buildings, flowers, mountains, rivers & rocks -- all very detailed & beautiful. I believe the blue color in the engravings are from the aging patina. Any "yellow" color is reflected from items around the piece.

The box measures 8 1/2" long, 6 12" wide, 4 1/2" tall, & with the bail up, 6 1/2" tall. It is a wonderful, heavy piece & the handle is solid. There are no markings on the bottom as this was a piece brought from China. I washed it, but it is still apparent that coals had been placed inside. The lid is reticulated with an Oriental symbol in the center of the lid. I cannot describe enough the beauty of this piece. Thank you for visiting The Treasure Chest. (Item ID:E-19) |
