This vintage John C Lewis Moon Ball is a deep cobalt blue with lighter gold, blues, etc., forming suggestions of celestial figures.
The moon bottle is in mint condition with no chips, scratches or cracks. It has been displayed with my glass collection since purchase.
Mr. Lewis was doing more architectural & structural glass design & fabrication than smaller objects such as this, at the time of purchase. His work is displayed in museums & he has won many prestigious awards.
I was fortunate in 1977 to have my pick of an entire batch of Lewis moon bottles & this was my favorite. There are 2 or 3 others illustrated in the Ray & Lee Grover book: Contemporary Art Glass -- neither, in my opinion, is as striking & colorful as this one.
The moon bottle measures approximately 5" in diameter & 5" tall. The orb is sealed & polished on the bottom but has a "hole" formed in the top - hence, moon bottle.
The base is engraved:Lewis Studios 97/115.(I cannot make out the first two letters or digits in the numbering.)
This beautiful & unusual item could be classified as a paperweight & added to your collection, or displayed as a glass sculpture. Thank you for visiting The Treasure Chest. |
