This is a mid-19th century (ca. 1860) English lap desk or writting slope - 17.5" long opened, 12" wide, and 2.75" high; closed 8.5" x 12" x 4.5". It has spaces for 2 ink wells and a covered place for pens. The box feature a centered brass inlay and brass inlay key escutcheon. This type of traveling lap desk was used by many military officers in the Civil War. Note the worn marblized paper on the bottom.
