This is a wooden mortar and pestle datineing from the early 19th century or possibly late 18th. It has an old blacksmith or copper made "make do" repairs to hold a forming crack together. It adds to the character of the piece.
Most every household in early America had a similar mortar and pestle in their kitchen to grind spices and cooking other ingredients. Such pieces also found medical and healing use. |
