This is a wooden mortar and pestle datineing from the early 19th century or possibly late 18th. This mortar featurs traditional turnings and groove bands and has an exceptionally well developed foot. It adds to the character of the piece. Only minor cracking. The pestle is also well turned.
Most every household in early America had a similar mortar and pestle in their kitchen to grind spices and cooking other ingredients. Such pieces also found medical and healing use.
