Country of Origin: United States
Manufacturer: Unknown Virginia craftsman

This is a large (21 inches high by 15 inches diameter) covered feather basket handmade from oak splints from a Washington County, Virginia, family estate - probably made in the surrounding area. Southwest Virginia, as with most of Appalachia is well known for the quality of their baskets. The basket is tightly woven, has two handles, and is very sturdy. The top is a separate woven piece, also beautifully done, attached with twine (recent). It has seen lots of use, but has no breaks or repairs. Baskets like this were used to collect feathers for use in pillows and mattress ticks. This basket was painted white maybe 20 to 30 years ago (in my opinion), the paint shows some wear and oxidation, but is not as old as the basket. You just do not find good older baskets of this size, quality, and in this condition very often.

Buyer pays shipping. Virginia buyer pays 5% sales tax.
