This is a French made painted wooden bucket. It is not rosemaled. Instead it has a primitive village scene painted on the sides, complete with a tri-color banner. The bucket is hand made with bands that appear to be well fastened. The lid of the bucket has some French writing and a painting of a woman on a horse. Her costume is 18th or 19th Century. Underneath the horse is the words 'anno 41'.
There is much I do not know about this bucket. That's the fun part about the business - so many mysteries. For example, what does 'anno 41' signify? Is it the age of the person writing the horse, a significant year in Napoleon's reign, or simply a short phrase designed to make one ask questions? Another mystery is the time of creation of this bucket. My best guess is that it was made in the Early Twentieth Century, around 1900 to 1914, but that may be optimistic. It could also be 19th century or from the 1920s on forward. Who knows.
Condition points are as follows: The bucket itself is intact. The lid has a crack along the grain of the wood. Paint has flaked off, especially on the lid, which makes it hard to read much of the writing. One of the bands is loose on the bucket.
Still, this will make one of the most intriguing items you could own. I think it is worth a second look. How about you?
