Click for more detail...

Bloodhound dog original Arthur Wardle card. This very pretty single card was made ready by John Players to be issued but the onset of the 2nd World War meant it was not.The images are taken from originals by Arthur Wardle. It has a fair amount of printed text on the reverse relating to the breed. It is a card from the 25 card series entitled "Dogs".It measures 2.5 inches by 3.25 inches approx and is in very good condition. The image and the text are a little clearer than the scan shows them to be. The printed text on the reverse of this card reads as follows....."The introduction of the Bloodhound into England is usually credited to Norman invaders who had utilized this hound's wonderful sense of smell for the tracking of game. Nothing definite of the breed's origin can be traced beyond the fact that a breed of hunting dogs had been bred at the monastery of St. Hubert in the Ardennes from about the seventh century. The extremely keen nose of the breed led to its being used as a tracker of criminals, such as sheep-stealers, poachers and robbers, and even to-day the police occasionally make use of the Bloodhound when searching for wrong-doers and escaped convicts. Few breeds other than Bloodhounds have attained show ring popularity without losing some of their working ability, but it is fairly safe to presume that nearly all the show dogs of this breed to-day can follow a scent several hours cold."Please note our policy of FREE Shipping and Insurance worldwide on all orders of $10.00 and above.

They have occasionally successfully tracked down criminals, and were formerly employed to hunt escaped slaves. The working qualities of the breed are carefully preserved by breeders, and the Association of Bloodhound Breeders annually holds tracking trials, and issues working certificates for animals which reach the necessary high standard." Bloodhound v.pretty dog original 1934 UK card. This very pretty single card was issued in 1934 by Gallaher's as part of their series of 24 cards entitled "Dogs".The reverse has printed text mainly concerning the breed with a few words regarding the dog pictured which is Champion Leo of Reynalton. The card measures 2.5 inches by 3.25 inches approx. It is in very good condition although it has at some point been corner mounted in an album and the residual pressure marks can just be made out and there is some light printing offset on the reverse which in no way affects the legibility of the text. The image and the text are a little clearer than the scans shows them to be.The printed text on the reverse of this card reads as follows....."It may be said that the Bloodhound is a distinct type of dog to which all the hounds are related. In early Scottish history, in the middle of the 16th century, these dogs were referred to as sleuth-hounds, having marvelous wit and being able to discover the whereabouts of miscreants long after they had fled. Even to-day they are used by the police of various countries for a similar purpose. The dog illustrated is an excellent specimen of the breed, and has won consistently in the show ring all over the country. He is owned by Mrs.N.E.Elms." It is from a set of 25 cards entitled "Dog Studies"...."A Series of 25 Reproduced from Photo Etchings". The card was given as a free premium in a packet of 25 State Express or Ardath Cigarettes. It measures 3.75 inches by 2.75 inches approx. The back of the card has printed details of the breed pictured. This card is in very good condition.... the actual image on the card is a little clearer than the scan shows it to be.The printed text on the reverse of this card reads as follows....."Bloodhounds are the present day representatives of the oldest known breed of hounds that hunt by scent, and their existence in this country can be traced back to the time of William the Conqueror. It is a matter of instinct with the Bloodhound to follow scent, and training develops this instinct until the dog becomes an accomplished tracker. In temperament the Bloodhound is equable and gentle, affectionate to his immediate circle and well mannered towards strangers. The extreme looseness of skin on the Bloodhound's head results in the characteristic pendulous ridges and folds on forehead, sides of the face and about the neck, and intensifies the natural solemnity of the hound's expression."
