This very pretty single card was made ready by John Players to be issued but the onset of the 2nd World War meant it was not.The images are taken from originals by Arthur Wardle. It has a fair amount of printed text on the reverse relating to the breed. It is a card from the 25 card series entitled "Dogs".It measures 2.5 inches by 3.25 inches approx and is in very good condition. The image and the text are a little clearer than the scan shows them to be.The printed text on the reverse of this card reads as follows....."This breed has not been seriously used in England as a sporting dog, but in Russia, before the overthrow of the aristocracy, it was the most highly-prized of all breeds by reason of the sport it provided as a courser of wolves. The Czars and many Russian nobles maintained large kennels and organized hunts on a big scale. The most famous of these kennels was that owned by the Grand Duke Nicholas, at Perchina, near Moscow, and the best of the early importations into this country belonged to this strain. The present Duchess of Newcastle was the first to import Borzois in any numbers and may be said to have founded the breed in England. Queen Alexandra furthered the breed's popularity here by exhibiting a Borzoi (given to her by the Czar), which became an English Champion".Please note our policy of FREE Shipping and Insurance worldwide on all orders of $10.00 and above.

Borzoi dog rare Cecil Aldin 1912 UK card. This is a very rare original single card from the 1912 set of 50 cards issued by Cope Brothers and Co. and illustrated by the famous artist Cecil Aldin. The image and the text are a little clearer than the scan shows them to be.The set is entitled "Dogs of the World".This card is in very good condition which is most unusual for these although it has at some point been mounted in an album and the residual pressure marks from the mounts can be made out and it has some light foxing on the reverse. It measures 2.75 inches by 1.5 inches and has printed details relating to the breed and some brief details as to the artist Cecil Aldin on the reverse where he is decribed as the "most celebrated modern painter of horses and dogs".Some brief biographical details as to Cecil Aldin are as follows,(not printed on the back of the cards)....he was born in 1870 and died in 1935,a fairly prolific painter especially of dogs. The Irish Wolfhound image in this series is supposedly of his own dog "Mickie".A good few of the breeds illustrated were not common at all in Great Britain at that time,(the paintings would probably have been done around the 1910/1911 period). The printed text on the reverse of this card reads as follows....."The Borzois or Russian Wolfhound is a very popular breed owing to its imposing appearance, elegance and air of refinement. It is of the Greyhound family, and probably originated in Persia. In Russia, its original use was in attacking wolves and foxes. It has now been introduced into most European countries where it is chiefly employed simply as a companion. Its colour is usually white, more or less marked with lemon."
