Click for more detail...

Cairn Terrier dog original Arthur Wardle card. This very pretty single card was made ready by John Players to be issued but the onset of the 2nd World War meant it was not.The images are taken from originals by Arthur Wardle. It has a fair amount of printed text on the reverse relating to the breed. It is a card from the 25 card series entitled "Dogs".It measures 2.5 inches by 3.25 inches approx and is in very good condition. The image and the text are a little clearer than the scan shows them to be.The printed text on the reverse of this card reads as follows....."Though his origin cannot be traced, the Cairn's career as show dog can be credited to Mrs. Alastair Campbell who, in 1908, began a publicity campaign for the rugged little working terriers which were found in the Isle of Skye. There they were used by the crofters to keep down such vermin as foxes and otters, and their small size and gameness were invaluable in pursuing their quarry into their underground retreats. The first name for the breed was "short-haired Skye Terriers" to distinguish it from the then established Skye Terrier, but this created so much opposition from lovers of the older breed that the new breed was eventually given its present name. In the Highlands these small terriers are still used on vermin, but in England they are kept almost entirely as show dogs or companions."Please note our policy of FREE Shipping and Insurance worldwide on all orders of $10.00 and above.

Cairn Terrier unusual unissued UK 1950's card. This very pretty single card depicting a Cairn Terrier was produced but not put into packets of cigarettes around the 1955 period due to the imposition of a tax on packets containing cards. The paper the card was produced on has an onion skin type finish. This card is taken from a series of 50 card entitled "Dog's Heads" by John Player and Sons of the United Kingdom. The illustrations are from drawings by Peter Biegel. There is printed text on the reverse relating to the breed. The card measures 2.75 inches by 1.5 inches approx. The image and the text are a little clearer than the scans shows them to be.It is in very good condition. The printed text on the reverse of this card reads as follows....."From the Western Highlands of Scotland we get several breeds of Terriers, of which the Cairn is probably one of the oldest, and nowadays one of the most widely known. It is remarkably active, courageous and tough despite its diminutive appearance. In its native country it is still used to drive foxes, badgers and other vermin from their refuges; in the south it is more prominent on the show bench and has become a popular pet. This popularity is due to some extent to its having been a favourite breed of the Prince of Wales (now the Duke of Windsor). Almost any colouring of the hard thick coat is acceptable." Cairn Terrier puppy v.pretty original 1936 UK card. This very pretty original single UK card was issued in 1936 by Gallaher Ltd.It has printed text on the reverse relating to the breed. It measures 2.5 inches by 1.5 inches. It is in very good condition.....the actual image is clearer than the scan shows it to be.The printed text on the reverse of this card reads as follows....."The Cairn Terrier is claimed to be the oldest Scottish breed and it is certainly much older than the Scottish Terrier (see No. 23 of this series). Nearly 150 years ago it was referred to as a common terrier with long body, bandy legs and of a sandy-lightish colouring, very different from the present type. Although the breed has been improved the Cairn still retains the hunting instinct, going to ground for rodents of all descriptions, work for which the smallness of its body makes it particularly suited. It is an ideal companion and guard." Please note our policy of FREE Shipping and Insurance worldwide on all orders of $10.00 and above.

Ltd.It measures 3.75 inches by 2.75 inches approx. It is from a set of 25 cards entitled "Dog Studies"...."A Series of 25 Reproduced from Photo Etchings". The card was given as a free premium in a packet of 25 State Express or Ardath Cigarettes. The back of the card has printed details of the breed pictured. This card is in very good condition.... the actual image on the card is a little clearer than the scan shows it to be.The printed text on the reverse of this card reads as follows....."There is little doubt that the Cairn is the oldest of the Scotch Terriers, the general opinion being that they originated from the Islnad of Skye. The Cairn is a born hunter, small enough to go in the ground after fox or badger, and his instincts are highly developed in this direction. Cairns as a breed, however, are extremely adaptable, appearing to thrive in either town or country conditions. The Cairn becomes greatly devoted to his immediate family circle, and if properly handled when young is very friendly with strangers, but at the same time very jealous of his master's property. Active and lively, he has a workmanlike rough coat of hard hair with a thick furry undercoat." Please note our policy of FREE Shipping and Insurance worldwide on all orders of $10.00 and above.
