Chow Chow dog original unusual 1936 UK card. This very pretty unusual single original card was issued in 1936 in the UK by Hignetts and comes from a set entitled "Dogs".This single card has printed text on the reverse relating to the breed pictured. It measures 2.75 inches by 1.5 inches approx and is in very good condition,(it is difficult to find in this condition). The image and text are a little clearer than the scan shows them to be.The printed text on the reverse of this card reads as follows....."The Chow was brought to this country from China during the last century, when it gained a popularity that persists to-day. It is a decidedly individual breed, very undemonstrative in temperament and aloof to strangers. It should have a distinctive "scowl" formed by loose skin on its forehead, and perfectly straight back legs which give it a stilted hind action. It is, however, a very active, strongly- built dog, and in Northern China is still used as a hunting and draught dog. The highest price ever given for a dog (£1,800) was paid by an American for Mrs. Mannooch's Chow Champion 'Choonam Brilliantine'."Please note our policy of FREE Shipping and Insurance worldwide on all orders of $10.00 and above.

Chow Chow rare Cecil Aldin 1912 UK card. This is a very rare original single card from the 1912 set of 50 cards issued by Cope Brothers and Co. and illustrated by the famous artist Cecil Aldin. The image and the text are a little clearer than the scan shows them to be.The set is entitled "Dogs of the World".This card is in very good condition which is most unusual for these although it does have a small amount of foxing on the reverse which does not interefere with the legibility of the text and a light corner knock to the top right. It measures 2.75 inches by 1.5 inches and has printed details relating to the breed and some brief details as to the artist Cecil Aldin on the reverse where he is decribed as the "most celebrated modern painter of horses and dogs".Some brief biographical details as to Cecil Aldin are as follows,(not printed on the back of the cards)....he was born in 1870 and died in 1935,a fairly prolific painter especially of dogs. The Irish Wolfhound image in this series is supposedly of his own dog "Mickie".A good few of the breeds illustrated were not common at all in Great Britain at that time,(the paintings would probably have been done around the 1910/1911 period). The printed text on the reverse of this card reads as follows....."The Chow Chow is sometimes described as the "edible dog of China", because it has been long, and is still, used as an article of food by the poorer classes in that vast country. It is closely allied to the Artic dog, as may be guessed by its general appearance, and from the fact that in Northern China the breed abounds, and is used to draw sledges across the snow like the Eskimo. In Europe it is solely regarded as a pet." Please note our policy of FREE Shipping and Insurance worldwide on all orders of $10.00 and above.

Chow Chow v.pretty dog original 1934 UK card. This very pretty single card was issued in 1934 by Gallaher's as part of their series of 24 cards entitled "Dogs".The reverse has printed text mainly concerning the breed with a few words regarding the dog pictured which is Champion Young Cheng of Amwell. The card measures 2.5 inches by 3.25 inches approx. It is in very good condition although it has at some point been corner mounted in an album and the residual pressure marks can just be made out and there is some light printing offset on the reverse which in no way affects the legibility of the text. The image and the text are a little clearer than the scans shows them to be.The printed text on the reverse of this card reads as follows....."This breed of dog originated in China, where they formed a general article of diet by coolies, while the better-off classes ate the puppies after they had been suitably fattened, and the skins sold as furs. During recent years this breed of dog has been not only imported but bred in this country, and the young bitch illustrated, although only two years old, has won five challenge certificates, and has the distinction of being of champion parentage. She is owned by Lady Faudel Phillips." Please note our policy of FREE Shipping and Insurance worldwide on all orders of $10.00 and above.

Chow Chow unusual unissued UK 1950's card. This very pretty single card depicting a Chow Chow was produced but not put into packets of cigarettes around the 1955 period due to the imposition of a tax on packets containing cards. The paper the card was produced on has an onion skin type finish. This card is taken from a series of 50 card entitled "Dog's Heads" by John Player and Sons of the United Kingdom. The illustrations are from drawings by Peter Biegel. There is printed text on the reverse relating to the breed. The card measures 2.75 inches by 1.5 inches approx. The image and the text are a little clearer than the scan shows them to be.It is in very good condition. The printed text on the reverse of this card reads as follows....."A native of China, the Chow Chow, with its "teddy bear" appearance, was commented upon in England as long ago as 1789. It was not until the end of the last century, however, that the breed achieved official recognition here. The Chow Chow was, and perhaps still is, bred in China as a source of food; its own diet consists chiefly of rice. Its long, rather coarse coat is valued in Mongolia, where it is bred almost exclusively for its pelt. Although an excellent house-dog, it has a detached, independent attitude. It may be wholly-coloured red, black, yellow or cream." Please note our policy of FREE Shipping and Insurance worldwide on all orders of $10.00 and above.
