English Setter dog year 2000 label/stamp. This very pretty label/stamp was issued for East Timor in the year 2000,(even though it looks like a postage stamp,in that it has perforations, gum on the reverse etc),it is probably not one in that it was never designed to perform a postal duty.It also has a cancellation mark on it that was very probably applied at the printers. It measures 1 inch by 2 inches approx and is in very good condition although it does have a light crease at the bottom edge. The image and text are clearer than the scan shows them to be. FREE Shipping and Insurance on all orders of $10.00 and above.

Click for more detail...

English Setter dog original Arthur Wardle card. This very pretty single card was made ready by John Players to be issued but the onset of the 2nd World War meant it was not.The images are taken from originals by Arthur Wardle. It has a fair amount of printed text on the reverse relating to the breed. It is a card from the 25 card series entitled "Dogs".It measures 2.5 inches by 3.25 inches approx and is in very good condition. The image and the text are a little clearer than the scan shows them to be. The printed text on the reverse of this card reads as follows....."No one can definitely say what breeds went into the making of the English Setter, but its development into its present form can decidedly be placed to Mr. Edward Laverack and Mr. R. L. Purcell Llewllin. The former began his strain in 1825, and eventually dogs bred by him obtained remarkable fame and came to be known as Laveracks. They were very fine-looking animals, stylish workers but difficult to break and handle. In 1871 Mr. Llewellin, in an attempt to combine the Laverack's good looks with a better temperament, mated some Laverack bitches with an out-cross, " Dan," and so created the Llewellin strain which survives to-day in many of the finest specimens. Unlike many gundog breeds, the English Setter shows little tendency to split up into two types-working and show -and many leading bench winners are equally capable in the field."Please note our policy of FREE Shipping and Insurance worldwide on all orders of $10.00 and above.

English Setter dog original unusual 1936 UK card. This very pretty unusual single original card was issued in 1936 in the UK by Hignetts and comes from a set entitled "Dogs".This single card has printed text on the reverse relating to the breed pictured. It measures 2.75 inches by 1.5 inches approx and is in very good condition,(it is difficult to find in this condition). The image and text are a little clearer than the scan shows them to be.The printed text on the reverse of this card reads as follows....."One of the oldest gun-dogs known in England, the Setter is mentioned in sporting literature of the 15th century, when the breed was first used in conjunction with the hawk. The English Setter's early development is probably linked up with that of the English Springer Spaniel, and about 1825 a sportsman named Laverack established a type which had great influence on the breed's appearance. But the most beneficial strain has been that which was originated by a Mr. Llewellin about 1870, by crossing a dog named "Dan" with Laverack bitches." English Setter unusual unissued UK 1950's card. This very pretty single card depicting an English Setter was produced but not put into packets of cigarettes around the 1955 period due to the imposition of a tax on packets containing cards. The paper the card was produced on has an onion skin type finish. This card is taken from a series of 50 card entitled "Dog's Heads" by John Player and Sons of the United Kingdom. The illustrations are from drawings by Peter Biegel. There is printed text on the reverse relating to the breed. The card measures 2.75 inches by 1.5 inches approx. The image and the text are a little clearer than the scans shows them to be.It is in very good condition. The printed text on the reverse of this card reads as follows....."In the opinion of Mr. Edward Laverack, the Setter is only an improved Spaniel. It was this famous dog breeder who, in the mid-nineteenth century, did so much to produce the English Setter we value so highly today. It is suitably built for work with the gun in the stubble and grassland, but unfortunately it is not worked often enough in England today. This is not the case in the United States where the Llewellyn strain of the breed finds great favour as a gun-dog. The English Setter is most attractive and good-natured. Its coat should be white, flecked with either black, lemon or liver markings, although patches of these colours are permissible."
