Click for more detail...

Wire Fox Terrier dog original Arthur Wardle card. This very pretty single card was made ready by John Players to be issued but the onset of the 2nd World War meant it was not.The images are taken from originals by Arthur Wardle. It has a fair amount of printed text on the reverse relating to the breed. It is a card from the 25 card series entitled "Dogs".It measures 2.5 inches by 3.25 inches approx and is in very good condition. The image and the text are a little clearer than the scan shows them to be. The printed text on the reverse of this card reads as follows....."Like all working breeds, the Wire Fox Terrier owes its present form to the show ring devotees, and the stock from which he sprung was composed of a motley collection of working terriers belonging to various hunts. The Grove Hunt kennels produced "Old Jock," the dog which is recognized as the father of the Fox Terrier, while the Belvoir Hunt gave us "Belvoir Joe," sire of the famous stud dog "Belgrave Joe," and the Oakley Hunt "Old Trap," another very influential early sire. These are the founders of the modern Smooth Fox Terrier from which the Wire is an offshoot, probably the result of mating early Smooths with the common black-and-tan terriers of the period. The Rev. Jack Russell bred a strain of working Wires, but it was not until a W. Carrick of Carlisle bred "Tack" that we had an outstanding Wire Fox Terrier. Careful and skilled breeding has produced the show dog of to-day."Please note our policy of FREE Shipping and Insurance worldwide on all orders of $10.00 and above.

This very pretty unusual single original card was issued in 1936 in the UK by Hignetts and comes from a set entitled "Dogs".This single card has printed text on the reverse relating to the breed pictured. It measures 2.75 inches by 1.5 inches approx and is in very good condition,(it is difficult to find in this condition). The image and text are a little clearer than the scan shows them to be.The printed text on the reverse of this card reads as follows....."Although the early Smooths and Wires were closely related, the origin of the Wire variety is not so well known, and it is thought that it resulted from crossing Smooths with broken-coated black-and-tan or grizzle-and-tan Terriers. "Carlisle Tack" was one of the first Wires to be shown, and his grand-dam was a Smooth by "Buffet." A famous owner of Wires of the working variety was the Devonshire parson, Rev. Jack Russell. The Duchess of Newcastle's "Notts" Terriers have had a great influence on the breed, another devotee is Brig.-Gen. Lord Roundway." The coming of dog shows refined the appearance of the Smooth considerably, and fixed the type of to-day's elegant Terrier. Among the many distinguished exhibitors of Smooths are the Duchess of Newcastle, the Maharajah of Pithapuram, and Baron van der Hoop of Switzerland." Smooth Fox Terrier dog rare Cecil Aldin 1912 UK card. This is a very rare original single card from the 1912 set of 50 cards issued by Cope Brothers and Co. and illustrated by the famous artist Cecil Aldin. The image and the text are a little clearer than the scan shows them to be.The set is entitled "Dogs of the World".This card is in very good condition which is most unusual for these although it does have light corner knocking at each corner.....please see the scan.It measures 2.75 inches by 1.5 inches and has printed details relating to the breed and some brief details as to the artist Cecil Aldin on the reverse where he is decribed as the "most celebrated modern painter of horses and dogs".Some brief biographical details as to Cecil Aldin are as follows,(not printed on the back of the cards)....he was born in 1870 and died in 1935,a fairly prolific painter especially of dogs. The Irish Wolfhound image in this series is supposedly of his own dog "Mickie".A good few of the breeds illustrated were not common at all in Great Britain at that time,(the paintings would probably have been done around the 1910/1911 period). The printed text on the reverse of this card reads as follows....."A dog of true sporting instincts, the Fox Terrier is perhaps the most generally popular of all breeds, as the friend and companion of man. He has few equals as a vermin dog, and in unearthing the badger and fox. The coat of the smooth Fox Terrier should be smooth, flat, but hard, dense and abundant. In colour, white should predominate, and for preference black, or black and tan or tan markings. Brindle, red or liver markings are defects." Wire Fox Terrier dog original 1934 UK card. This very pretty single card was issued in 1934 by Gallaher's as part of their series of 24 cards entitled "Dogs".The reverse has printed text mainly concerning the breed with a few words regarding the dog pictured which is Crackley Sure Thing. The card measures 2.5 inches by 3.25 inches approx. It is in very good condition although it has at some point been corner mounted in an album and the residual pressure marks can just be made out and there is some light printing offset on the reverse which in no way affects the legibility of the text. The image and the text are a little clearer than the scans shows them to be.The printed text on the reverse of this card reads as follows....."As far back as the 16th century Terriers were known and, according to an authority on the subject, have been evolved from the Cairn Terrier of Scotland. They are described to be hard-fighting and swift-running, and ardent when they went to earth after foxes. They retain these characteristics even today, but the show specimen is now built on finer lines. The young dog illustrated has the distinction of winning the premier award of the "Best in Show" at the Kennel Club Show of 1933 ." Wire Haired Fox Terrier unissued UK 1950's card. This very pretty card depicting a Wire Haired Fox Terrier was produced but not put into packets of cigarettes around the 1955 period due to the imposition of a tax on packets containing cards. The paper the card was produced on has an onion skin type finish. This card is taken from a series of 50 card entitled "Dog's Heads" by John Player and Sons of the United Kingdom. The illustrations are from drawings by Peter Biegel. There is printed text on the reverse relating to the breed. The card measures 2.75 inches by 1.5 inches approx. The image and the text are a little clearer than the scans shows them to be.It is in very good condition. The printed text on the reverse of this card reads as follows....."The name Terrier is a derivation of the Latin terrarius-dog of the earth--and the Terrier is indeed expected to work under-ground, dig if necessary, and draw or kill its quarry. The aristocrats of the Terrier group are the Fox Terriers, of which the Wire-haired variety enjoys a widespread popularity in Britain today. Card No. 44 describes the Smooth Fox Terrier, and apart from the texture of its coat, the Wire-haired is similar in all respects. As with many breeds, the dog bred exclusively for showing tends to lose its working ability, to the detriment, some aver, of an excellent sporting breed". The Smooth Fox Terrier was the more favoured of the two when the Fox Terrier Club was founded in 1896, but it has recently lost ground to its Wire-haired relation. As a sporting dog it accompanies the hunt, and is used to enter earths and hideouts to draw the fox. Its attractive clean appearance and alert, intelligent bearing has led to its world-wide adoption as a household pet. In colour its flat smooth coat should be predominantly white with dark markings."
