Click for more detail...

Irish Setter dog original Arthur Wardle card. This very pretty single card was made ready by John Players to be issued but the onset of the 2nd World War meant it was not.The images are taken from originals by Arthur Wardle. It has a fair amount of printed text on the reverse relating to the breed. It is a card from the 25 card series entitled "Dogs".It measures 2.5 inches by 3.25 inches approx and is in very good condition. The image and the text are a little clearer than the scan shows them to be. The printed text on the reverse of this card reads as follows....."Probably a descendant of the old "setting" Spaniels, the Irish Setter owes its development as a gundog to Irish sportsmen who wanted a dog with great dash and endurance and a good nose. The early Setters were either all red or red-and-white in colour, and even to-day the latter variety is still bred and occasionally exhibited in Ireland. In this country the Irish Setter has achieved its greatest popularity as a show dog. Several breeders confine their activities to the production of field dogs, and are inclined to doubt the working abilities of many of the show bench specimens, on the grounds that they are too elegant to be robust and too highly-strung to be tractable in the field. However, the Irish Setter Field Trial Association and the Ulster Irish Red Setter Club help to keep the breed on a stable base by annually promoting field trials for it."Please note our policy of FREE Shipping and Insurance worldwide on all orders of $10.00 and above.

Irish Setter dog original unusual 1936 UK card. The early Setters were red and white, and in Ireland some of this variety are still kept, and are occasionally classified at shows. The modern variety is, however, wholly red, the colour being established by skilful selective breeding. The Irish is the most popular show Setter, but in the field English Setters are more numerous." Please note our policy of FREE Shipping and Insurance worldwide on all orders of $10.00 and above.

Irish Setter dog Cecil Aldin rare 1912 UK card. This is a very rare original single card from the 1912 set of 50 cards issued by Cope Brothers and Co. and illustrated by the famous artist Cecil Aldin. The set is entitled "Dogs of the World".This card is in very good condition which is most unusual for these. It measures 2.75 inches by 1.5 inches and has printed details relating to the breed and some brief details as to the artist Cecil Aldin on the reverse where he is decribed as the "most celebrated modern painter of horses and dogs".Some brief biographical details as to Cecil Aldin are as follows,(not printed on the back of the cards)....he was born in 1870 and died in 1935,a fairly prolific painter especially of dogs. The Irish Wolfhound image in this series is supposedly of his own dog "Mickie".A good few of the breeds illustrated were not common at all in Great Britain at that time,(the paintings would probably have been done around the 1910/1911 period). The printed text on the reverse of this card reads as follows....."The origin of the Irish Setter is unknown, but it is probably the same as the English variety. It is used for hunting game birds. The colour should be a rich golden chestnut, but with no trace of black, white on chest, throat or toes, or small star on forehead. The coat, on chest, front of legs, and tips of ears short and fine, on other parts of the body and legs of moderate length, flat, and free from curl or wave." Irish Setter unusual unissued UK 1950's card. This very pretty single card depicting an Irish Setter was produced but not put into packets of cigarettes around the 1955 period due to the imposition of a tax on packets containing cards. The paper the card was produced on has an onion skin type finish. This card is taken from a series of 50 card entitled "Dog's Heads" by John Player and Sons of the United Kingdom. The illustrations are from drawings by Peter Biegel. There is printed text on the reverse relating to the breed. The card measures 2.75 inches by 1.5 inches approx. The image and the text are a little clearer than the scan shows them to be.It is in very good condition. The printed text on the reverse of this card reads as follows....."With its origins lost in the unrecorded sporting history of its native Ireland, the ancestry of the Irish Setter (or Red Setter) is very vague. It is safe to say, however, that a red and white setter was known to have existed in Ireland for many years before the breed was introduced into England in the early 19th century. Although pure red is the desired colour nowadays, faint white markings are permissible. The Irish Setter compares favourably with the Gordon and English Setters, and, although at one time it was reputed to be wild and unreliable, proper training has remedied this without destroying its spirited nature." The back of the card has a fair amount of printed details relating to the breed. It measures 4.5 inches by 2.5 inches approx. It is in very good condition although there is some faint sunlight fading/yellowing to the right edge which does not in any way interfere with either the image or text and there is a spot in the bottom margin to the right.....please see the scan. The image is a little clearer than the scan shows it to be.....the cross hatching behind the dog is a product of the scanner and is not on the card. The printed text on the reverse of this card reads as follows....."Of all the world's Setters the Irish breed is the best known; it is possible too that it is the oldest of the existing types. In Eire it is worked extensively but elsewhere it is predominantly an show dog, and a very handsome one. Last century very many specimens were red-and-white instead of all-red, and this attractive colouring is now winning admirers in the British Isles. Height 24-26 inches. Weight about 60 lb. Colour rich chestnut red, or red-and-white. Coat medium, flat and soft." Please note our policy of FREE Shipping and Insurance worldwide on all orders of $10.00 and above.

Irish Setter v.pretty original 1936 UK card. In build it is similar to the English Setter,(see No.34 of this series) but its beautiful chestnut colouring makes it less conspicuous on a shoot as it blends into the background of moorland or gorse. It is a sensitive animal, the uninitiated may almost think it nervous, but so highly intelligent that it can be trained to do almost anything. An Irish Setter in good coat, with good tail and feathering, makes a striking picture when at work." Ltd.It measures 3.75 inches by 2.75 inches approx. It is from a set of 25 cards entitled "Dog Studies"...."A Series of 25 Reproduced from Photo Etchings". The card was given as a free premium in a packet of 25 State Express or Ardath Cigarettes. The back of the card has printed details of the breed pictured. This card is in very good condition.... the actual image on the card is a little clearer than the scan shows it to be.The printed text on the reverse of this card reads as follows....."It was not until the middle of the last century that Irish Setters were much seen outside their native land, and there is little doubt that the present day dog with his chestnut coat was evolved from an original type bearing white markings. As a general rule, the Irish Setter, while of more more volatile disposition than his English cousin, is a steady and reliable worker in the field. In domestic circles he is a charming companion, affectionate and sweet-natured. The Irish Setter's coat should be of fair length, flat with no curl, and much of his handsome appearance is due to the silky feathering of legs and the symmetrical fringe of the tail. Eyes should be dark hazel or brown." Please note our policy of FREE Shipping and Insurance worldwide on all orders of $10.00 and above.

This very pretty single card depicting an Irish Setter called "Jill" is a reproduction of the original late 1930's card issued by W.D.& H.O.Wills from their 40 card series entitled "Puppies"......the set never made it in to general circulation because of the onset of the 2nd World War and paper rationing .The images were drawn by Lucy Dawson,(also known as "Mac"),who was a very much admired dog artist in her day and who is still well known today. The reproduction set from which this card is taken was issued in 1990 by Imperial Publishing Ltd in England. It has printed comments on the reverse by Lucy Dawson relating to the dog/s pictured........please click on the smaller image to the left which will bring up a scan of the rear,(the printing and image are clearer on the card than the scans shows them to be). The card is in very good condition and measures 3.25 inches by 2.5 inches approx. Please note our policy of FREE Shipping and Insurance on all orders of $10.00 and above.
