Field Spaniel dog v.nice original playing card. This very pretty single playing card was recently issued in China. This single playing card measures 4.75 inches by 3.5 inches approx. It is in very good condition although it does have a small area of surface disturbance which can be mainly seen when the card is held at angle to the light...please see the scan. The image and the text are a little clearer than the scan shows them to be.  

Field Spaniel dog original Arthur Wardle card. This very pretty single card was made ready by John Players to be issued but the onset of the 2nd World War meant it was not.The images are taken from originals by Arthur Wardle.It has a fair amount of printed text on the reverse relating to the breed.It is a card from the 25 card series entitled "Dogs".It measures 2.5 inches by 3.25 inches approx and is in very good condition.The image and the text are a little clearer than the scan shows them to be. The printed text on the reverse of this card reads as follows....."The Field suffered as no other Spaniel from the breeding efforts of show bench devotees. Originally created by crossing Sussex and Cocker Spaniels, the Field was intended to be a worker of dense scrub and undergrowth but a more sedate and larger dog than the Cocker. He was made low on the leg and lengthy in the back. These attributes became crazes with some exhibitors,who eventually produced dogs so long in back and so short in leg as to be incapable of moving soundly. Shortly after the Great War,a much-needed reaction against these monstrosities took place, and by careful breeding, the Field has been given back a physique which fits the purpose for which it was created. This very pretty unusual single original card was issued in 1936 in the UK by Hignetts and comes from a set entitled "Dogs".This single card has printed text on the reverse relating to the breed pictured.It measures 2.75 inches by 1.5 inches approx and is in very good condition,(it is difficult to find in this condition).The image and text are a little clearer than the scan shows them to be.The printed text on the reverse of this card reads as follows....."This is a breed which, it is thought, originated from the crossing of the English Springer, Cocker and Sussex Spaniels. It is low on the leg, and was bred so that it could easily get under gorse and brushwood. At one time exhibitors carried the low-to-ground and long body ideal to extremes, so that the breed became almost a monstrosity, and useless in the field. Fortunately a reaction set in and, after determined efforts, the Field Spaniel became once more a good looking and capable animal." This very pretty original single trade card was issued in the United Kingdom in 1988 as part of a set of cards entitled "Dogs" "1st series".Printed text on the reverse relates to the issuer which was "Cofton Collections".It measures 2.75 inches by 1.5 inches approx.It is in very good condition and the actual image on the card is a little clearer than the scan shows it to be.

This very pretty original single UK card was issued in 1938 by Gallaher Ltd as part of their 48 card series entitled "Dogs" "Second Series of 48".It has printed text on the reverse relating to the breed.It measures 2.5 inches by 1.5 inches.It is in very good condition.....the actual image is clearer than the scan shows it to be.The printed text on the reverse of this card reads as follows....."The Field Spaniel is one of the least common of the numerous race of Spaniels. He is one of the smaller kind, no taller than the Cocker (seen on No. 26) though larger in the body. The Field Spaniel bears a very close resemblance indeed to the Sussex Spaniel, yet they are recognised as separate breeds, chiefly on account of colour. The Field Spaniel is all black, as shown, whereas the Sussex has a glistening gold and brown coat."
