Click for more detail...

Foxhound dog original Arthur Wardle card. This very pretty single card was made ready by John Players to be issued but the onset of the 2nd World War meant it was not.The images are taken from originals by Arthur Wardle. It has a fair amount of printed text on the reverse relating to the breed. It is a card from the 25 card series entitled "Dogs".It measures 2.5 inches by 3.25 inches approx and is in very good condition. The image and the text are a little clearer than the scan shows them to be.The printed text on the reverse of this card reads as follows....."These hounds are utility dogs purely and simply, and rarely appear in the show ring except at such events as the Peterborough Hound Show, whose appeal is chiefly for hunting people. This is undoubtedly due to the jealous care with which the Foxhound is bred by the various hunts, who guard against letting the breed get into wrong hands. It is thought that the breed goes back to the Talbot Hounds, a relative of the Bloodhound brought over by the Normans, and that English Greyhound and Bulldog blood were introduced a long time ago to increase speed and tenacity. The packs of hounds vary a little in conformation according to the country they hunt. Mountainous districts demand a more lightly-built hound than flat country. The Foxhound Club Stud Books contain the pedigrees of dogs belonging to strains which go back hundreds of years."Please note our policy of FREE Shipping and Insurance worldwide on all orders of $10.00 and above.

Foxhound dog original unusual 1936 UK card. This very pretty unusual single original card was issued in 1936 in the UK by Hignetts and comes from a set entitled "Dogs".This single card has printed text on the reverse relating to the breed pictured. It measures 2.75 inches by 1.5 inches approx and is in very good condition,(it is difficult to find in this condition). The image and text are a little clearer than the scan shows them to be.The printed text on the reverse of this card reads as follows....."The Foxhound probably owes its origin to the crossing of Greyhounds with a very old English hound known as the Talbot. His beautiful appearance is entirely due to the breeding skill of generations of Masters of Foxhounds, who have jealously guarded the breed...so much so that a Foxhound is rarely seen away from a hunt pack. It has disappeared as a show dog, except at the annual Peterborough Hound Show." Please note our policy of FREE Shipping and Insurance worldwide on all orders of $10.00 and above.

Click for more detail...

English Foxhound Cecil Aldin rare 1912 UK card. This is a very rare original single card from the 1912 set of 50 cards issued by Cope Brothers and Co. and illustrated by the famous artist Cecil Aldin. The set is entitled "Dogs of the World".This card is in very good condition which is most unusual for these. It measures 2.75 inches by 1.5 inches and has printed details relating to the breed and some brief details as to the artist Cecil Aldin on the reverse where he is decribed as the "most celebrated modern painter of horses and dogs".Some brief biographical details as to Cecil Aldin are as follows,(not printed on the back of the cards)....he was born in 1870 and died in 1935,a fairly prolific painter especially of dogs. The Irish Wolfhound image in this series is supposedly of his own dog "Mickie".A good few of the breeds illustrated were not common at all in Great Britain at that time,(the paintings would probably have been done around the 1910/1911 period). The printed text on the reverse of this card reads as follows....."The Foxhound is one of the best known sporting dogs used in the British Islands, where the sport of fox hunting is very popular with all classes of the people. The strains of the different hunts are carefully preserved in the Fox Hound Stud Books. The colour is either black, tan and white, or pie-bald. The coat should be short, dense, and rather hard in texture." Please note our policy of FREE Shipping and Insurance worldwide on all orders of $10.00 and above.

Click for more detail...

Foxhound unusual unissued UK 1950's card. This very pretty single card depicting a Foxhound was produced but not put into packets of cigarettes around the 1955 period due to the imposition of a tax on packets containing cards. The paper the card was produced on has an onion skin type finish. This card is taken from a series of 50 card entitled "Dog's Heads" by John Player and Sons of the United Kingdom. The illustrations are from drawings by Peter Biegel. There is printed text on the reverse relating to the breed. The card measures 2.75 inches by 1.5 inches approx. The image and the text are a little clearer than the scan shows them to be.It is in very good condition. The printed text on the reverse of this card reads as follows....."Although the fox had been hunted for hundreds of years previously, it was not until the late seventeenth century that organised packs of hounds were used. From 1750 onwards several Staghound packs were converted for foxhunting, and thus it was in the Staghound that the Foxhound had its origin. The fox is a fast and cunning animal, and in consequence the Foxhound needs to be fleet of foot, possessed of immense stamina and of acute powers of scent. Scientific breeding has combined these qualities in the superb dog we know today, which is considered to be the aristocrat of all breeds."
