| This is a wonderful large landscape oil painting on canvas, signed by the artist, "J. Tompkins". On the back of the stretcher is the original "Salmagundi Art Club" label. This artist must have been a member of the Salmagundi Club. The focus of the painting is the antique covered bridge and its reflection in the water. There are some amusing details the artist included in the painting, such as the fish jumping out of the water after a dragonfly. Also, there’s an owl perched in a tree in the upper right hand corner; and just below the ‘Chew Mail Pouch’ sign is the artist’s initials, "J.T.". I wonder if the initials are really carved there? This very appealing oil painting is in excellent original condition. Original wire hanger. Circa 1930’s - 1940’s. |
