Samplers were used to teach little girls the art of sewing and embroidery once upon a time. This example was embroidered by Catherine L R Watson in 1929. The ship is the Sovereign of the Seas, a 102 gun clipper ship built in 1852, by Donald McKay in Boston, for the British Royal Navy. There is a lot of exquisite handiwork here including the alphabet and an elaborate border. It is in the original frame measuring 17 1/2 inches long and 14 1/2 inches wide. Country, classic, whatever your decor this sampler will look right.
