Lot of 8 Chinese coins plastic sealed These remarkable collector's items are some of a variety of Chinese coins that came from a dealer's collection. We do not know the years or where these were actually minted. We are not coin experts, and have no personal means of determining or confirming the numismatic value or metal content of the coins from the collection. They appear to be commemorative in nature.

These coins are of the same shape and size, and came carefully fitted in double-sided plastic transparent pouches with eight slots each, the kind of pouches that coin collectors use to fasten within a spiral folder.

They are well preserved to this day, and quite popular and fascinating to many coin collectors, especially to those who enjoy the imagery of Chinese culture.

Gold 24k Escudo coin Colonial Spanish American period. A genuine Spanish Escudo coin, circa late 16th. century or early 17th. century, possibly from the time of Spanish King Phillip II or from King Phillip III. The assymetrical position of the cross on the one side and the shield on the other side adds to the impression of its authencity as a relic of at least the 17th. century or earlier.

In his volume "Gold Coins of the World: Third Edition", published in 1971 when gold was worth approximately $37.44 per ounce, the coin is referenced on page 351.

The superscripted 'M' next to the shield appears to have been a mintmark indicating the coin was minted in Madrid, Spain, and thus travelled across the Atlantic aboard the Spanish galleons that travelled to the Spanish colonies in the New World.

A number of shipwrecks occured during the era in which Spanish galleons travelled to the New World, often yielding a rich bounty in sunken treasures that included Spanish gold escudos. One such shipwreck, off the coast of Equador in the late 1500's, yielded a treasure trove deemed to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars. This gold escudo, along with many others, may well have been the relic of such a sunken treasure.


Diameter of the coin is approximately 1.6 centimeters ( .629 inches).
