Victorian Made in France Cut Steel Shoe Buckles + clip
This item is a beautiful pair of late Victorian cut steel shoe buckles. Cut steel jewelry became popular in the 18th and through the 19th century for its beautiful intricacy and sparkle in candlelight. Because the product was labor-intensive - cutting, faceting, polishing and riveting - it was very expensive to make, often requiring two to make a pair of shoe buckles. Generally, the smaller the studs of cut steel the older the item. The early centers of trade active in early Victorian times were in England but later the French took over the trade.
These buckles are 2 5/8 inches long by about 1 13/16 inches wide. The pattern is an open work net with a row of two studs around the outside. Only when you inspect them very closely can you notice that one stud is missing on each buckle. They do show wear but no evidence of rust. As an added bonus I have included one clip (very hard to find!) that they used to attach to the shoe. Made by "EVERGRIP PATENT appled for". This clip does show some rust.
