Flow Blue Platter -- Dorothy Pattern -- W.H. Grindley
This is a nice large flow blue platter measuring approximately 12" x 17.5" which was manufactured by W.H. Grindley Company of England.
The underside is marked with a patent date which reads: Oct 19th.97.USA. I'm making an assumption that it was marked this way do to the 1893 trade enactment requiring all imports to be clearly marked with a date.
The W.H. Grindley mark has the following information and it is in a blue ink. 11 -- Dorothy -- Trademark --W.H. Grindley & Co., England -- RN305978 F. There is an impressed 56, as well as a number in blue ink and what looks like an initial in the gold paint. I'm again making an assumption that these marks had to do with the decorators.
The gold trim is worn some from use and there are a few scratch marks in the glaze on the top side of the platter, from use I'm sure. The only actual damage I find is a chip on the underside which is aged brown now and it does not show on the front side.
