Donald McGregor Cigar Box circa 1880-1910
This is an antique cigar box labeled Donald McGregor, for 50 Coronado Cigars.
The box is in very nice condition for its age and a helpful website to look over is .
The Caution Notice on this box is most likely circa 1880-1910 and is from the Factory No. 1st District Station Ohio and reads; "The manufacturer of the cigars herein contained has complied with all the requirements of law. Every person is cautioned not to use either this box for cigars again or the stamp thereon again, nor to remove the contents of this box without destroying said stamp under the penalties provided by law in such cases." The tax stamp is present, but has been worn away in the middle.
This is a nailed wood cigar box with hardware. It measures approximately 8" x 4.5" x 2.25".
Graphically the design of the time was to cater to the woman desires of the men and this entrepeneur did just that. There is a barrell design on the lid both top side and underside, with a lovely Victorian woman. Donald McGregor's name is at the top of each barrell. Unfortunately, someone used the box for buttons later in life and the word buttons is penciled on the front of the box, over the lovely lady, but I think it also adds charm!
Manufacturer: Donald McGregor
