Somayaki Cups from Northern Japan - Set of Two This is a great set of two Somayaki Pottery Cups from Northern Japan. They are the double sided cups, which keep your tea hot while not burning your hands.

Each cup has the open work all around, in the shape of hearts, and edged in gold leaf. There is also a gold outline of a ferocious beast - on the top portion of each cup. There is gold at the very top edge, and it is slightly worn - or was never very pronounced.

These cups have the crackled look, but the surface - both inside and out - are very smooth.

Each cup stands three and one-quarter inches high, has a diameter at the top of three inches, and the same diameter at the bottom - except the bottom gets smaller in layers, which you will see in the photos, and ends in a round hole.

These feel very good in the hand and also are very attractive, as you know - if you collect this pottery.

Porcelain Pink Lidded Bowl, with White Flowers, Small This is a very pretty, but quite small, pink bowl which has a lid and has white leaves and flowers raising up on the lid.

I guess you would call this shape a kind of round octagon. The bowl measures two and three-quarter inches in height, to the top of the flowers on the lid, and is three and three-eighths inches in diameter.

There is a red and gold paper tag on the bottom which says it was Made in Japan. I do not know the age of this bowl.

There are no chips, cracks, or mars on this bowl or lid, but there is a rusty spot on the bottom, inside, which you can see in one of the photos.
