History of Hattie Carnegie: Born Henrietta Kanengeiser, this remarkable woman moved with her family to New York from Vienna in 1900, when she was 14 years old. In 1909 she changed her last name to Carnegie in emulation of the richest man in America. Hattie Carnegie developed a line of chic daytime wear and spectacular evening gowns which sold in her own exclusive boutiques. She began her business in New York prior to 1923. In 1923 she moved her business to a more fashionable New York address and then soon expanded across the country. Some sources state that she began designing accessories and jewelry which were sold with her clothing as early as the 1920s, but an announcement in Women's Wear Daily in 1939 stated that her first collection of costume jewelry was being released at that time. Hattie Carnegie died in 1956, but the company continued until the 1980s. The jewelry is marked HATTIE CARNEGIE or simply HC.
