Valentines have been messages or tokens of love or friendship for centuries. By the late 19th century, most were mass-produced by machine. They can be identified by heavy layers and applied scraps (die-cuts). Post card Valentines and die-cut open-out styles became popular towards the end of the 19th century. These open-outs were often decorated with honeycomb tissue paper made of heavy cardboard. Many were manufactured in Germany and extremely intricate with lace and intricate design. By the 1940's they were much simpler in design but had their own charm.
