Libbey started in East Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1818. William L. Libbey took over the company in 1878 and renamed it the New England Glass Works, Wm. L. Libbey & Sons Props. In 1888, he moved his glass-manufacturing establishment from Massachusetts to Toledo, Ohio. The Libbey Glass Company became even more profitable after Michael Owens, an inventor from Newark, Ohio, joined the firm. Owens developed a machine that could automatically produce bottles, tumblers, and glass chimneys. The company still is in business today. |
