PhotoGravure. American Indian. Old Arapaho Chief ? First off let me confess that beyond my lifelong admiration for all Native Americans, I have very little experience with early photographic images. That said, my good fortune in happening upon this magnificent portrait has peaked my curiosity to know more about his fate.
This photograph of an older Native American Indian man has captured not just his image, but his wisdom, his sadness and his intense pride. Is he an Arapaho Chief? A tribal elder? Written on the back of the picture are these words, ' Real Indian from a N. Dakota tribe. Don't know his name.
Hurbert.' Evidently Hurbert collected this photo long ago somewhere in North Dakota. I returned to the auction site and inquired about Hurbert, but was told only that he may have built and lived in the old Victorian house, but was thought to have been killed in WWII. The shear lack of information contained on this photograph makes me certain it is authentic. The photo measures 8x10 and was purchase as part of a box lot of old frames - some broken - and other images and fortunately was among the few not damaged by broken glass. Who is this proud old soul? Where did he come from and where did he go? If anyone can shed light on these questions, please do.

PhotoGravure. American Indian. Arapaho Warrior ? Again I want to confess that beyond my lifelong admiration for all Native Americans, I have very little experience with early photographic images. That said, my good fortune in happening upon this magnificent portrait has peaked my curiosity to know more about his fate.
This photograph of a proud young Native American Indian man has captured not just his image, but his strength, and his intense pride. Is he an Arapaho warrior? A future tribal chief? I wish I knew, but all I have to go by is what's been written on the back of the picture, ' Real Indian from a N. Dakota tribe. Don't know his name.
Hurbert.' Evidently Hurbert collected this photo long ago somewhere in North Dakota. I returned to the auction site where I bought the piece and inquired about Hurbert, but was told only that he may have built and lived in the old Victorian house, but was thought to have been killed in WWII. The shear lack of information contained on this photograph makes me certain it is authentic. The photo measures 8x10 and was purchase as part of a box lot of old frames - some broken - and other images and fortunately was among the few not damaged by broken glass. Who is this fierce looking young man? Where did he come from and where did he go? If anyone can shed light on these questions, please do.
