This beauty is an Antique 19th century American Black Powder, percussion Plains Rifle that would have fired approximately a 40 caliber round lead ball. The octagonal barrel has blade fore sight, notched rear sight and a very functional Goucher lock mechanism. The hand detailing of the brass patch box and the many different custom inlays speaks of its maker as being a man of extreme skill and patience. The lock plate has a hunting scene hand engraved in tiny details and the barrel itself is signed by the maker in what looks to be his natural long hand signature. I could make a guess or two at the man's name, but prefer to leave that to be discovered by this gun's new owner, for his own enjoyment and personal satisfaction. This is a fine old rifle with some dings and a few repairs to cracks and thumps, but all of it done well and all of it done because this gun was used a lot. Even after all these years you can see the quality in the burlwood and tiger-striped grain of the stock and in the fine detailing of the fittings and patchbox. This is a gun to display with pride and to brag a little to your friends about the price you paid for it. MEASUREMENTS: Overall length: 50 inches Note: Under Federal law, this is considered an antique firearm. Check your state's laws regarding its possession. |
