This wonderful old mechanical door bell, or turn bell as some call them, was made by Sargent & Company and bears a patent date of 1883. The bell has a heavy iron mounting frame which holds the mechanisms, a thick , solid brass bell with a fine looking patina and a brass thumb turn, also with its original age patina. Unlike many of these old Victorian bells you may see for sale, which often are missing a part internally, are broken, or do not have the correct type of operator needed in order to actually work, all the bells we sell at Picker's have been tested and are ready to install and use as soon as you get them. If they are not working , we won't list them. This is what was considered a medium size, but at three and a half inches across, this old brass bell is plenty loud enough to make you wonder why anyone ever wanted to switch to electric doorbells in the first place. Not only is it loud, with a ring that will carry throughout your entire house, the distinctive sound of a real brass bell is so much more pleasing to the ear than those digitized, fake bell sounds you get from the doorbells of today. Just drill a single hole for the turn shaft, then two screws for the bell side and two for the turn, next thing you know a half hour has barely gone by and you already have your new-antique doorbell working and ready to greet the neighbors. These make the most fabulous gifts for anyone with a front door. |
