Condition: early original float mounted Color: Grayscale Lithograph Manufacturer: Watermarked with raised B & more Author: Jean Paul Selinger
I must admit that this lithograph has me stumped. I have found numerous of Jean Paul Selinger's other works, but not like this. The top right corner is marked Copyright 1899 by Jean Paul Selinger. The bottom left corner has a fancy raised seal or watermark that contains a large letter B along with some smaller letters or words I have not been able to identify. The right bottom corner also has a raised seal that appears to repeat at least part of the copyright information from above. I am sure there are ways to reveal these markings, but I will leave that job to someone much more qualified than I am. The picture is mounted in what has been described to me as a floating mount, which was common in the late 1800's and involves the etching, which measures 10 by 13 inches, being glued to a contrasting border, which is about a half inch larger than the etching. Then this piece is set over a flat gray/brown background and framed with a simple wooden frame of a slightly darker color. The backing paper, black in color, is old and very fragile and where it is torn loose one can see that thin sheets of rough sawn wood hold everything together. There is a partial nametag on the back which I am certain says, - Tilden Thurber Co. Art Gallery Providence, R.I. - This lovely old piece has some marks and stains and spots, but none have enough power to take anything away from this wonderful image of a young woman clearly in love. I believe the reason I have not found another like this anywhere may have to do with the simplest of reasons. No one who has a copy has any desire to part with it. JM |
