Circa: 1860 Condition: used. antique. good Color: patina'd brass Country of Origin: United States Manufacturer: Federal Army Author: Unknown. Hand made
I believe this to be an ID tag that would have been fastened to the wooded frame of a cannon or caisson to signify the unit it belonged with. In this case i am fairly sure that this 4 3/4 by 2 1/2 inch, hand hammered brass oval plate was attached to one of the smaller sized cannon used by Cavalry regiments, thus the fancy number 2 on the oval tag would mean this piece came from a piece of military hardware belonging to the 2nd Union Cavalry. The plate is a rare enough piece by itself, but what I find most interesting about it is what I am able to see on it's back. Perhaps my eyes are playing tricks on me, but there seem to be quite a few markings and letters, badly worn, but still partially visible. Please take a look at the photos to see if you can see them too. :) Ships Free |
