This is an original Civil Car Cavalry Hat Badge - The familiar Crossed Swords made of brass. This was actually a Pre-Civil War insignia and for that reason it was worn by members of both the Union & Confederate Cavalry units during that conflict. In fact, even though this large size insignia; (approximately 1¾ inches high by 3¼ inches wide) was retired and replaced at the end of the Civil War with a new, smaller version, General George Patton actually wore this same old style and size insignia on his collar, while serving as a Lieutenant during our conflict with Mexico. This particular hat insignia was purchased some 20 years ago from a small antique shop, several miles to the west of Gettysburg, Pa.. The brass swords have look like they've been left to age themselves with the passing of time, as you can see in places where no verdigris has formed, the brass has a deep brown patina. This is not a pristine piece. There exist the normal bruises and bumps of use and wear, but to me that adds much more character to this old Cavalry Insignia. This will make a fine addition to any collection of Civil War artifacts. Free US Shipping |
