Not many of these around anymore. This unique looking old solid brass bell was once an important part of some long forgotten trolley or streetcar. The bell itself is dome shaped and mounted to a frame designed to fit the angled roofline and trim on the inside of the trolley car. The bell measures about 4 1/2 inches in diameter and overall the entire assembly measures 10 inches tall by 4 1/2 inches wide. The entire bell and frame are made of solid brass, so it is quite heavy. This great old bell would have hung on an angle where the ceiling met the wall of the car just above and to the right of the driver's head and he would reach up and pull the chain to signal an upcoming stop to his passengers. I doubt many of you have a trolley car that's in need of a bell, but wouldn't this brass hand operated bell make a great doorbell or maybe even a dinner bell for someone's sailboat? So many possibilities. |
