Kentucky Derby Majestic Prince
This item of interest caught my attention at a recent estate sale - a lock of hair listed as belonging to Majestic Prince, the Kentucky Derby winner of 1969. The inexpensive wood frame measures 7 3/4" tall, 5 3/4" wide. The hair has been attached with thread to a thin piece of tan wool material and cut to fit the frame - it does not fill the frame completely. Under the lock is a hand-written note "Lock of hair from Magestic Prince winner of Kentucky Derby, Preakness, finished 2nd in the Belmont Stakes - 1969" The spelling of Majestic is with a "g" and the bottom corner of the note is smudged. There is no signature and it is obviously a homemade job - but an interesting find nonetheless! Something out of the ordinary for the Derby or horse racing memorabilia enthusiast.
Majestic Prince was inducted into the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame in 1988 and was ranked in the top 100 U.S. thoroughbreds of the 20th Century.
