Click for more detail...
1247

RARE c.188O SEPIA 8 INCH MINTON WAVERLY TILE: ROB ROY Based on the Waverly novels by Sir Walter Scott, these John Moyr Smith designed tiles (twelve in all) were introduced at the Paris Exhibition of 1878. The tile features "Rob Roy in Glasgow Tolbooth" (prison) from chapter 23 of the book, to quote: "The magistrate took the light out of his servant-maid's hand, and advanced to his scrutiny, like Diogenes in the street of Athens . . . The first whom he approached was my mysterious guide, who, seated on a table as I have already described him, with his eyes firmly fixed on the wall, his features arranged into the utmost inflexibility of expression, his hands folded on his breast with an air betwixt carelessness and defiance, his heel patting against the foot of the table, to keep time with the tune which he continued to whistle, submitted to Mr. Jarvie's investigation with an air of absolute confidence and assurance, which, for a moment, placed at fault the memory and sagacity of the acute and anxious investigator". Produced in sepia monochrome, the larger eight inch size allows for splendid additional decoration not found on the six inch versions, this includes large heraldic shields in two corners, borders of thistles, clover and leaf sprays, as well as emblems in the other two corners. CONDITION: chips to the left hand reverse edge, small chip to the bottom reverse edge, both not visible from the front; one very small nick to the extreme edge of the right side; very light glaze crazing and surface wear; very good image definition - if you have any questions about this item, contact me. Seller operates a 100% money back returns policy if not completely satisfied. Circa 1880, pattern number 1607, signed "Moyr Smith" lower left, book chapter number lower right, the reverse marked "Minton's China works Stoke on Trent". 8in/20.32cm.
